I have been going through all these posts to find what items are the best things to have for nursing school. The posts are all scattered so I thought I would start a post that will contain all the info for the new incoming students.
I would like to know what I should spend my money on when it comes to study guides, NCLEX review books, NET review books, best nursing shoes (without a logo), stethescope, misc nursing items you have to have, etc. Any new students/senior students/graduate nurses have any info they can share? What were the items you couldn't live without???
Thanks for your input!
A copy of the most current edition of the APA manual for all those blasted reseach papers, nursing journal article critiques, and careplans so that you will not get charged with plagarism!! I cannot tell you how many classmates I have seen get in trouble for 'plagarising" when in fact they weren't using the correct format when referencing their information.
:yeahthat::yeahthat: Definitely! There are soooo many careplans to write that a good APA manual is good to have in order to cite your references the right way.
I'm a third of the way done with my program (I graduate this December! yay!!!) and what I have found is that time management, a positive attitude, and overall interest in the material is essential to do well. I have to say that some of the material I have had to read has been a bore. Most of it has been absolutely interesting and informative. However, there are times when there's a chapter on a system--which may be the book's fault--that is soooo boring, interest in the material tends to disappear. This happens in lecture sometimes too. Some profs just read off the powerpoints and it draaaags the class to the point of frustration. So, the more focus you have on the material, and if you make that a goal for yourself, the more likely you are to do well in some of the "less" interesting subjects.
in response to a dansko question, any of you who have a military ID can get danskos at the exchange for 76 bucks, i just stocked up on the white 'marcelle' mary janes and the cordovan mary janes. compared to regular stores it's a deal. just thought I'd put in my two cents. I think danskos are completely worth it. they never wear out! they just get more comfortable. the arch support is awesome and i love being a little taller. it straightens out my posture. i guess i just love them.

Thanks I never even thought about buying nursing shoes at the PX. I'm going to check out the local nursing uniform stores and if there more expensive than the PX I will definitely check the PX out.
Buy more uniforms than they tell you that you'll need. The seniors are looking faded and awfully threadbare!
Also, I keep a clean spare uniform in my car at all times. Never know what's going to happen!
And, last but not least, I don't know if anyone has suggested safety pins or not?? In my program we are allowed to wear our wedding bands but in some specialty areas it is hospital policy that you wear no jewelry. Rather than putting my ring in my bag or pocket, i safety pin it to my undershirt or bra.
