What am I doing wrong? (Hospitals & My Resume)

I have been applying, like mad, to any hospital I can get ahold of. I call the potential employer, asking if my resume and credentials have been reviewed, but I am rejected or I never hear back. I have 2 solid years of experience doing admin/clerical work for the same company. Sometimes, this is all the hospital requires for qualifications. I now have a BLS Healthcare Provider CPR and was accepted into a well-known and exceptional nursing program in the area. All of this doesn't seem to be impressing the hiring staff.

Any good, constructive criticism for me? I can take it :)

Is your resume reflecting your actual accomplishments and achievements or does it read like a generic job description?

To stand above the crowd, avoid making generalized statements in your resume.

CTA- I have been applying for a Unit Aide, General Clerk, Patient Transporter, Health Unit Coordinator. They are all considered entry-level, at least at the hospital I am applying to.

PCA- Anything would help!

i will advise you to try to get a PCA or CNA license, i think that shld help because a lot of hospitals are hiring CNA's and you can also do that part time while you are in school

Sometimes YOU may not be the problem. The economy is pretty bad right now and lots of hospitals are on a hiring freeze.

You said you were accepted to a nursing program...have you started? If so, I would try to look for student nurse worker position. Many hospitals have these positions and you basically function as a CNA. The best part is that you gain experience and many nurses will take you under their wing and teach you things. I was lucky to work as a student nurse and was promoted to an RN position after I passed my boards. I think it's also easier to land a job when someone on staff recommends you, so if you anyone that works in the hospital setting you should ask if they can recommend you to their nurse manager. The ecomony is horrible right now and it's hard to get hired..so don't feel bad. Best of luck!

Hi! Have you considered applying to a Long Term Acute Care Facility? They are less common than 'regular' hospitals...But they are a little more open to employing people with non-traditional training for the job they are applying for. It's a good learning environment- the patients are acutely ill, you have auonomy in practice, my LTAC hires RN students as 'Nurse Tech's' who have more responsibilties than CNA's- They hire nursing students as CNA's prior to that poin in their training... Hope this helps...

I did the same thing, I got my BLS (CPR&AED), hoping it would increase my chances of getting a job. For the first 5 months or so, I got a lot of interviews, but no job. Then I finally got a job at an outpatient clinic as a CSR.

I applied at outpatient clinics, Home health agencies, doctor's offices, community clinics, even dental offices.

Do you at least get interviews? If you are there is probably nothing wrong with your resume, either they withdrew the position which happens a lot or hired someone else. It may be your interviewing skills as well.

But if you have a feeling that the interviews are going well, and your resume is getting you interviews, it just may be your competition, someone has better skills or whatnot.

But keep trying. You will lad a job....eventually.... and when you get it, hold on to it.

It's just the economy. I haven't had a job in 2 years. Of course I haven't been looking for the past 8 months since I decided to go to school. But when I was looking, I heard nothing. There are millions of people like you who just get passed on for no reason other than the amount of applicants! Don't take it personally, just keep on trying. Maybe try to take some classes that would make you more marketable, such as CNA/PCA or other classes along that line.

It's been over two years since I wrote this! I am happy to report that I survived Nursing School, passed my boards and now work as a R.N. I am not working at my "first choice" facility, but I love it. Thanks for the support, y'all!
