Published

We have a thread about What I like about nursing. So this is a new refresh one!

Stress and headache, eating unhealthy food b/c no time to watch diet anymore.

Here is what I hate about nursing. Some of you have seen this before.

1. The lack of respect from doctors, patients, family members, coworkers, managers, and society

2. The increase in accountability for patient outcomes, without the corresponding increase in salary

3. The fact that new nurses are churned out into the workforce every 6 months, further saturating the job market for nursing

4. The general consensus that nurses are warm bodies who simply fill shifts

5. The low workplace morale that can often be observed at many healthcare facilities

6. The low self-esteems and passive aggression of some nurses

7. The increase in lateral workplace harassment

8. The public's very outdated perception of the nursing profession

9. The fact that there is a myriad of different ways to become a nurse (LPN, ADN, BSN, MSN, Ph.d)

10. The female domination of the nursing profession

11. The desire for hospital administrators to maximize profit margins, without regard to nursing staff or patient safety

12. The practice of recruiting new nurses, rather than the retention of highly experienced nurses

13. The expectation that nurses can "do it all" while working understaffed, and lacking supplies

14. The expectation that the nurse is also the customer service rep, bellhop, concierge, waitress, clerk, messenger, courier, pillow fluffer, and receptionist

Yes, VERY WELL SAID! Number 14 is why I am heading to graduate school in the fall. I am capable of so much more!

I totally agree. Numbers 13 and 14 in particular burns my butt. I also hate the total lack of support from management when the pts or families get mad that you do not treat them like they are at a high end hotel. Sorry my job is to take care of you medically and it is not to cater to your every whim. No I am not sorry if that aittude shows through from time to time.

These would be the main things I hate as well. I say this because I have had other jobs outside of the Nursing field, but my co-workers and I banded together to make the best of the situation.

We always helped one another, stood up for each other and generally tried to make 8-10-12 hours of a bad situation one of many hours of good. When I think back on those jobs, I think of all of the laughing and joking I did. I think of how I could always count on my co-workers. I think of how people would stand up for each other if a boss/manager said something mean or raised their voice to one of us. If someone was having a problem, others were there to fix the situation, not stand around and gossip about the mistake.

Unprofessional co-horts, the misconception that the blue sign with the white H on it suddenly means Hotel...I cannot wait until I see RN assisted valet parking which would have to be documented, highschool like gossip, RN's that exist that still have a problem with guys, Aides that are passively or outright abusive to student nurses. Other than that IMO nursing beats cubicle work anyday.
