What should I get my girlfriend for graduation?

Published

I'm a newbie, but I'm not a nurse. I'm just a nurse's boyfriend. I came on here to find out what kind of stethoscope I should get her for her graduation. I'm not sure if she plans on going into pediatrics or geriactrics (only because she's not even sure herself). Could I just get her one that could be used for kids and older patients alike? Or, should I get her one of each? I also wanted to get her name engraved in it/them. Would getting one gold plated be too much? I'm do know that it/they will be Littmanns, though. Thanks for whatever help or feedback you supply.

You're so sweet! I have a Littmann and love it. I do med-surg and pedi and use the same scope. We have a neonatal scope on the floor for tiny babies if we need it. They do make stethoscopes with bell's that turn- to accomodate either adult or pedi patient's. I would be careful about the gold-plating. Stethoscopes have a tendency to develop legs if not watched carefully.

How sweet. I am a student, but how about a good pair of nursing shoes? Have fun :)

I wish my boyfriend was this sweet :) You will probably get a ton of different responses in regards to type of stethoscope. I have a Littmann and love it! How about a watch if you don't end up getting the stethoscope?

Good luck and happy hunting!:p

If you don't mind me asking, why a watch? Is that something that nurse's usually have trouble with? Should it be a particular watch? What did you have in mind?

I agree with the Littman stethescope. All nurses need a watch for taking pulses, respers etc. I asked for a wtch for christmas but I told my husband it has to have military time on it too. Most hospitals and LTC facilities use military time now. Either one is a wonderful idea. I would advise against the gold plating though. They sell seperate name clips that you could buy for the stethescope.

They have a lot of different "nurses watches" out there. If your GF is a bit sentimental, there is a nice sort of old fashioned one that pins on the blouse and is upside down so when she looks down she sees the time as if it was right side up. They were very popular in the 1950's and beyond. I still see some nurses wearing them. They never go over too well in the ED because patients who are confused tend to snatch at them. (Guess thats the same, in peds or geriatrics.)

Stethoscope is a good idea, but you will want to get an idea of what she wants...

Also there is a charm necklace with the caduses and the word "RN" (can't spell today), and possibly she might like that to wear all the time....seems to be very popular with the nurses I work with.

COngrats to your GF!!!!

My good friend got me a gift certificate for a local uniform store here. I was really glad to get it so I could get some new uni's and did not have to wait for the first paycheck. The other thing I really liked was the book Chicken Soup for the Nurses Soul. Just my .02.

Thanks for all of your responses to my questions. But what kind of Littmann should I get her? I had my eye on either the Master Cardiology, or the Cardiology III. I like the style of the M.C., and it seems like it's a step up from the CIII, but the CIII seems like it's better for switching between pedi and geriatric patients. Can the M.C. be used on children? Should that be what I base my decision on? Any advice?

I have the C III and it's very good. To be honest, when I listen to kids I tend to use the big diaphragm anyway. Most peds nurses I've worked with do the same unless it's on the teeniest of babies.

The cardiology 3 is great! I have it and I really like it a lot. That would be a great buy. Congrats to your girlfriend

A watch is one thing I feel naked without. Nurses need them for just about everything. And the poster who suggested one with military time is right--that would be great. I don't have a particular brand in mind, it was just a suggestion. Good luck!
