I'm a newbie, but I'm not a nurse. I'm just a nurse's boyfriend. I came on here to find out what kind of stethoscope I should get her for her graduation. I'm not sure if she plans on going into pediatrics or geriactrics (only because she's not even sure herself). Could I just get her one that could be used for kids and older patients alike? Or, should I get her one of each? I also wanted to get her name engraved in it/them. Would getting one gold plated be too much? I'm do know that it/they will be Littmanns, though. Thanks for whatever help or feedback you supply.
I would advise against buying a stethoscope as a surprise. Thing is- everyone has their own tastes, and they have to use the thing so so often, that they are going to want a very specific color, style. Personally, I do not like the Cardiology three- it's great, but very expensive, and once you loose one, you really feel it- so I stick with the very reliable Littman Classic II and I rarely loose it, though I have bought about three in the past years because they do get stolen.
I feel stongly about this because my boyfriend did this, and it was the wrong one- I did not want the one he chose, and he had it engraved, and I felt that I had to be using it until of course it got stolen. It was a real problem because he had spent a lot of money on it...
So I'd advise to ask her what kind of scope she wants before you sink money into one. She's going to have to use it everyday.

How about a class ring? Even if an official one isn't offered from the school, most class ring manufacturers will custom make one with her school on it, perhaps with an RN and medical symbol on the sides and her favorite stone set in it. Also, have you thought of perhaps getting her a high-quality lab coat with her name embroidered on the breast pocket? Those are beautiful. Also, a subscription to a nursing journal would be awfully thoughtful. You're so sweet to want to do this for her. Lucky girl!
