What do you hate about your Nursing School?

I need to vent. I hate, hate, hate my nursing school. The instructors openly admit that they try to weed people out, they're impatient with you if you're not already a tech, they're racists, and seem to hate their job. I have had an awful experience, so much so that I don't want to go to my own pinning. Anybody else feel this way?:angryfire

I've been looking for a thread like this. Came along just in time.

I hate the attitudes of some of my fellow students. I find that I can get along with pretty much everyone, but they can't seem to get along with each other.

It's not just a few people, it's a fairly substantial part of the class that's guilty. And it's not just one attitude...short-tempered, arrogant, impatient, flighty, tactless, disorganized...take your pick. Behavior that I'd call "unprofessional".

And I wonder if this is true for nursing as a whole...I do hear a fair amount about bad management and "toxic units". If what I see is representative of the profession as a whole, then no wonder there are all kinds of problems....

Yes, I can relate. I was in an RN program (twice). I did not pass semester 1 in 2003. I took a year off and returned the following year. I passed first semester and did not pass my second. To make a long story short I took off another year and went back for my LPN. During my attempt at the RN program I was belittled and made to feel very inadequate. No one ever encouraged me when I was feeling down. I had many, many struggles. I told myself though, that I would not give up no matter what. I wish I could write more but I am so tired after having two exams in a week.

I'd love to hook up again. I don't always have time to go online but I will try. Hang in there. Be strong!

I am in my last semesters of pre-reqs and I look around at the classmates that I will most likely start clinicals with next semester. All I can do is sigh! These students are going into nursing school thinking that it will be easy (yes, they really do think this). They are disrespectful in class: laughing, texting, talking, cell phones going off. They copy each other homeworks, do NOTHING in science labs. I would LOVE to see them next semester when it is time for skill check offs. Who is going to do your skill for you? They gossip, compare how many Ds they have gotten in other pre-reqs, laughing like it's funny.

There was one girl last semester whose phone went off EVERYTIME the class was taking an exam. No lie. While I get along with everyone in my classes, I make sure to keep it professional because I notice that people in my class will try to take you for granted if they feel you are their "friend".

I know I should only worry about myself, but sometimes I wish I could change my classmates. They are so immature, disrespectful, etc. In my one class, my entire table of lab partners are lazy. Every week, my lab prof picks a table and does a demonstration at that table to show us what to do for lab. Last week, while she was demonstrating, my table was sitting down copying each others homework, texting, talking, etc. I think they thought that because I was watching the demmonstration that I would go back and do all the work for them. HAAAA! I think not!

After the demonstration, I went up to 2 classmates at another table that I had a good rapport with, told them my situation and asked if I could work with them. They said yes. When my original table realized the demonstration was over and I wasn't coming back to the table, they called the prof over and asked her to help them with the lab. She told them not to ask her anything because when she was doing the demonstration, she weren't paying attention. We had 3 (easy) lab assignment to do which took, no lie, 15 min to do. When everyone left, my original group was still there trying to figure out what to do.

I also dislike that our school has no Saturday contract with hospitals for our Peds/OB rotations. So, when it comes time for those, we may have to do VIRTUAL SIMULATIONS on the computer instead of the real stuff. (pray that they get a site for us!)

We had 4 weeks of the simulator! I feel your pain!

No encouragement from my professors either. One told a friend of mine that since he was so stressed out, maybe he should go on anti-depressants!:angryfire

There are many students that leave their cellphones on during class and they constantly ring or vibrate and so forth. A lot of people text during class, too. It's extremely distracting. There's also a lot of cliques.. I thought high school was over?

It's also not very organized, although this semester is a lot better than it was last semester and a lot of instructors seem to get impatient and angered when you ask them questions. We had an incident with an instructor and I believe she acted completely unprofessional when students asked her questions. She became defensive, started yelling and kept saying she was no longer going to waste her time on the matter but continued on for 15 minutes. After class, she was talking about those students to other students, several different times. Then in the labs, she brought it up AGAIN. There's more to this story, but I felt this incident was absolutely ridiculous and it makes me angry.

And my main complaint.. it's so stressful! But that's any nursing school and it's not their fault! :wink2:

I just started nursing school so there's really not much I "hate" but on our first test it seemed like most of the questions were trying "trick" us. I understand how important critical thinking is but will it really help me to be a better nurse if I can figure out where someone is deliberately trying to trip me up. I actually did well on the test but guess I just resent the approach. Also from what I've heard here and around school every instructor is different so it's almost like you have to read their minds to figure out how to pass a test or a clinical. :icon_roll

Other than that I'm pretty happy with school. I love my clinical and instructor and group, they are all seriously amazing. Our teacher wants us to relax and concentrate on the basics of being a good nurse. She really gives us the tools we need to succeed as well as the support. And the group is all nice and focused on school. No slackers but no competitive show-offs. :heartbeat

I know by the time I'm done I'm sure I'll be able to write a book about things I hate but for now things are moving along nicely. .....Just remember it will be so worth it, when we're done :yeah:

I hate the fact that no matter how hard I try I just can't get that A on the tests! :uhoh3: But considering they told us day one that there would probably be about 1 A, 5 B's and the other 30 would be C's I guess being one of the B's isn't too shabby. I also hate the know it all classmate who has a story about every single thing we talk about and who is constantly disrupting the teacher to add her two cents and is also whispering and disrupting my education. Other than that our teachers are great! They are so supportive and really seem to love what they do! Overall I'm enjoying my experience, although I do miss my sleep!

I have to agree with you. There's only a couple of people in my class that are "cliquey", and they talk about other people behind their backs. Um hello- we're all supposed to be ADULTS here.

So far I haven't had them in my clinical group, but since there's less than 30 of us, I know I'm going to have one of these people in my group eventually.

And it is stressful. I can't seem to crack higher than a C on any of my tests, and it is SO FRUSTRATING. I keep saying that at least I'm passing.

Hi Guys,

I'm new to this board. I received an email telling me I had a reply but I cannot seem to find the person who replied to me.

Can you help me?

Thanks

I could do without all the "talking down" to us like we are a bunch of idiots. They act like we just walked in of off the street applying to a newspaper want ad. We do not know everything yet, that is why we are STUDENTS, but a little more respect towards us could go a long way.:angryfire
