What is your graduation gift?

Published

So, we were talking at study group about what we'll give ourselves for a graduation gift.

I am thinking (seriously) about taking a cruise on a small ship to Alaska in the summer of 2010...a 7 day cruise to see a part of the country I have always loved and wanted to get to. I have no idea how I'll pay for it, but I am really, really thinking about doing that.

And, I'll get a second horse when I have passed the NCLEX and have secured a job.

What's your graduation gift to yourself?

My wife and I are chronic cruisers, and we're planning to go on an Alaskan cruise (or, alternatively, fly there and rent an RV) when I graduate in May.

Once I've gotten a job, I plan to buy a really nice luxury vehicle...5 series BMW, maybe a Mercedes sedan, maybe one of those new Cadillac CTS-V's. We're also chronic roadtrip-takers, and by God, I want a comfortable ride!

:yeah:Spring Break of 2011, a family cruise out to Hawaii and a few days in the islands! Can't wait!!!

I thought that was a study aid. :lol2:

A new car. I'd like a hybrid, something sporty, but I'll just settle for something with a true new car smell. :) A Toyota or a Honda for sure.

7 Series BMW...my dad's dream car...sadly he didn't live long enough to get one nor see me make the career change from teaching to nursing...

Keep resting daddy...We will have it soon!

We are going on a cruise too! Cruising is the way to go

Absolutely. Wife and I have been on many, and they are great vacations.

I would suggest that you go on your vacation before you start working. It might be hard getting time off so soon after starting a new job. Our teacher of our Nursing Outcomes class (teaches us about resume writing, job interviews ect) told us that a big no-no in an interview is to say "I can start work on such and such but I already have a vacation planned for such and such a date"

I would 190% disagree with your teacher on that one. I have a feeling that she was probably speaking from her own personal pet-peeve rather than actual practice.

You are better off mentioning it at the interview than after you start working.

This is a more common request than you think.

My graduation present is finally having a real income again. Within the first year I plan on buying a nice car, and my son and and I are going house hunting. In addition, we may take a vacation to somewhere fun to make up for all the times I could spend time with him, and had to study.

I have to agree w/Hopefull. I have been at plenty of jobs where the COH (condition of hire) was a certain time frame off. Some were getting married and going on honeymoons, some had pre-planned vacations etc.

As a matter of fact right now, I work with 4 nurses brand new to the facility I work with who have a COH for certain times off. 3 of the 4 are brand spankin new nurses who were hired before taking the NCLEX and the other has about 6 months under his belt.

I don't think its an uncommon occurance. As long as you mention it during the interview that you can start on such-and-such date BUT you need XYZ time off d/t prior commitments, and not spring it on them after you are hired and that you need that time off.

Congrats to all you soon-to-be graduates.

My graduation gift was the ohh so needed and missed time with my family back! My hubby got me an early grad present, got me my dream car BMW Z4 convertible :) I graduated in June and wanted to take a vacation w/the family but I was able to schedule my NCLEX only days after graduating and was hired before 2 days grad ceremony at the facility I am at now.

Hopefully, I'll get to go on vacation w/the family sometime in the next few months.
