I'm a 24 year old male entering an Accelerated BSN program at Umass in September. Although it has very little to do with my desire to go into nursing, the gender discrepency (supposedly 93%-7% in the workplace) is certainly a nice fringe benefit. Did you guys find the gender ratio to be very favorable to heterosexual males?
We have 6 guys in our class of 32.

They're treated like everyone else. Half have med experience. One is pre-med.
Their input is valued.
*shrug*
...but they sure are flirty. Dating is the last thing on my mind.

Someone mentioned this and I'd like to say that I'd be happy to work with a bunch of males, too.
It always means less craziness and BS.
Where I last worked, the radiology dept didn't see a moment's peace until the bulk of the females left and we rec'vd an influx of males. There was a lot of joking about and flirting - but, at least the environment was less stressful. It was fun.
At my LTC, we have 3 male nurses and several female nurses.
I can only hope that my first nursing assignment is similar.
There are a lot of males at my school, though. So...I have hope.

I've actually never heard of a gay male nurse stereotype.
Male nurses are just that: Nurses.
To me, anyway.
25 years as an LPN, I am telling you that 80% of all male nurses I have encountered are homosexual. Including yours, truly. My problem is you'd never peg me as such, and it isn't pleasant being hit on by women at work, and having to blow them off- when they lack gaydar they get very angry to find out. I'm not in, nor out, I simply don't care- and only explain myself when women hit on me, to prevent it from happening again. Comments, ladies?
