What were the gender ratios in your nursing classes?

Published

I'm a 24 year old male entering an Accelerated BSN program at Umass in September. Although it has very little to do with my desire to go into nursing, the gender discrepency (supposedly 93%-7% in the workplace) is certainly a nice fringe benefit. Did you guys find the gender ratio to be very favorable to heterosexual males?

In my class one man for every 4 women and I am not concerned about anyones sexual orientation.

49 females..... and then there's me.

Yeah...

Specializes in ED, Telemetry,Hospice, ICU, Supervisor.

Remember the rule " Dont **** where you eat". Gonna be in the same program with the same people for the next few years, not a good idea to poison the well. If things get messy its gonna come flying back with the quickness and there is no where to run to.

Specializes in Med Surg - Renal.

We had around 7 guys out of a class of 80. I had a fantastic class; all the guys were treated very well by the staff and other students. There were no gender based difficulties of any kind I was aware of.

I don't miss nursing school, but I sure miss some of my classmates.

We have about 25 out of 60.

Specializes in Psych, LTC/SNF, Rehab, Corrections.

We have 6 guys in our class of 32.

They're treated like everyone else. Half have med experience. One is pre-med.

Their input is valued.

*shrug*

...but they sure are flirty. Dating is the last thing on my mind.

Someone mentioned this and I'd like to say that I'd be happy to work with a bunch of males, too.

It always means less craziness and BS.

Where I last worked, the radiology dept didn't see a moment's peace until the bulk of the females left and we rec'vd an influx of males. There was a lot of joking about and flirting - but, at least the environment was less stressful. It was fun.

At my LTC, we have 3 male nurses and several female nurses.

I can only hope that my first nursing assignment is similar.

There are a lot of males at my school, though. So...I have hope.

I've actually never heard of a gay male nurse stereotype.

Male nurses are just that: Nurses.

To me, anyway.

Specializes in cardiac, emergency.

About 15 males and 150 females in my class:D

7 out of 55.

Unsolicited advice: Don't dip your pen in class - or company - ink.

4 males, 56 females. No clue about sexual orientation and don't really care to know.

Hopkins 2012 trad class

1:9 ratio (15males:135females)

6 straight, 4 gay, 5 idk

the odds are good, but the goods are odd

Specializes in LTC, MDS, plasmapheresis.

25 years as an LPN, I am telling you that 80% of all male nurses I have encountered are homosexual. Including yours, truly. My problem is you'd never peg me as such, and it isn't pleasant being hit on by women at work, and having to blow them off- when they lack gaydar they get very angry to find out. I'm not in, nor out, I simply don't care- and only explain myself when women hit on me, to prevent it from happening again. Comments, ladies?

You said a mouthful there, buddy. Describes hospital work in general, IMO.
