  1. Congratulations! Is the NAPNAP core review book similar to the NAPNAP online course? What about in terms of questions? I think Im going to buy the PNCB's practice questions. Oh oh and what are these practice exams from exam edge you speak of? Oh gosh, I'm freaking out a little right now since I take the ANCC test in a little over 2 weeks from now. I finished going through NAPNAP's online course and going over the ANCC review book. I have the orange book as well. I know you didnt take the ANCC, but thank you for your post and responses! asdfjk; should i get Barkley too. arghakdsjf;aj
  2. Studying for my PNP boards right now; and now that I can register to sit for the exam, I noticed that ANCC gives credentialing discounts to ANA and AANP members. I have also noticed while applying for jobs, that there are areas where you can insert organizations you are a member of. So while the discount for the exam is nice, which organization do you find has been most beneficial for you? For discounts (conferences, CEs, anything). For finding a job. For what looks good on your job application. For networking. For getting your voice heard. Anything. As a hopeful PNP candidate, I was also looking into NAPNAP. Problem there was California has a lot of regional chapters, and I dont know where I may end up. Anyone have thoughts on CANP or found that it was worth being a member of their state NP organization? Thank you in advance for any thoughtful insights! Happy New Years!
  3. Hi everyone. I graduate from a PNP program and officially receive my diploma on 12/30. My advisor has already encouraged us to start job hunting more than a month ago. But I do not know what to put down as my possible start date on applications. I plan on moving back to my home state of California to work, so I will be using Method 2 to receive my license, which requires me to take boards and have the certifying body verify it for CA's BON. My question is after passing my boards, when can I expect to start working so that I may put a possible start date on my applications? Basically, what's the turnaround like for CA's BON for out-of-state new apps? After searching this forum, I've read up to 2 months for in-state apps and endorsed out-of-state apps. And I'm guessing no, but is it possible to start working as a NP while your licensing is still being processed? Thank you in advance.
  4. mmm stash your pockets and eat when theres even a little bit of downtime or when charting. my icu is chill though cause technically we're not supposed to have food out at the various comp stations
  5. thank you for the great advice. what state are you located in if you don't mind me asking?
  6. I have heard of NPs doing solo minor surgeries, but that is a done on a hospital-by-hospital basis per their policy. Think the majority surgical NPs are assists to MDs. Maybe someone from either of these postings can help. https://allnurses.com/nurse-practitioners-np/surgical-np-part-841564.html https://allnurses.com/nurse-practitioners-np/surgical-np-experience-840905.html
  7. The NP w/ vs w/o RN experience will always be a debate. It really comes down to your work ethic. Half my NP class is w/ RN experience. I started to work as a RN at the same time my NP program started. Academically, the 2 groups perform the same; sure the RNs with experience may know more about their specialty in which they work in, but you have to remember that they haven't been in school for some time now. The RNs without experience most likely just came from school with everything still fresh in their minds. Bluntly put, if you put the time in, anyone can memorize and perform well on exams. Clinically wise, it can sometimes be easy to spot the RNs without experience during case scenarios in class, but this will improve during actual clinicals with practice and repetitiveness. Of course there are exceptions to this as some students can act well, have more of a bubbly personality, build patient rapport easier, or are just smoother in their actions. Again, this gets easier with practice, intro/rapport, hpi, ros, pe, ddx, dx, rx, tx, pt ed, f/u all the while playing/interacting/distracting the kid (I'm a PNP student).
  8. I would hope that all NPs do a little health promotion! (time permitting of course). Given the current obesity crisis, I would expect your interest in fitness to benefit your patients in any age category. Specialization wise, it would certainly fair well with diabetes clinics. Idk if ortho specialization exists for NPs though; may have to do some research!
  9. where is this? i know places that pay $50+/hr but obv COL is high there e/ years of exp matters too obv. some places bump pay/yr or @ intervals like say /5yrs
  10. cxr only once after initial pos. ppd to rapidly assess latent/active. blood draws annually s/p to maintain.
  11. Im a 23yo NS and I have latent TB, most likely from my overseas exp. Only itch is annual blood draws instead of ppd - a very small itch
  12. group interview - 8 people. 4 interviewers rotating questions. 1. scenario questions about patients and what would you do. diabetic patient asking for non-diet soda. patient asking to smoke, etc. 2. if you had a billion dollars, what would you do with it 3. if you had a super power, what would it be. iirc, other very general interview questions training is similar to that of a cna's (bathing, transport, ADLs) GL!
  13. yes 1. female pt w/ hx of rape 2. female pt b/c of pericare 3. female pt b/c of bathing other experiences 1. male pt requested male to assist w/ bath (so i helped instead of the female NS) 2. male pt requested female to assist w/ bath instead of me 3. had a female older adult pt choose me to be her student nurse for the day intead of her current female student nurse i try not to take it personally. its customer service. i tell myself to be professional. patient gets what the patient wants.
