What are foods and supplements for energy and to help your brain function

I'm not getting much sleep at all so what foods and supplements exactly are nursing students taking to go through the day and to help your brain function correctly? I'm looking at caffeine and 5 hour energy drinks for that energy burst during the day...

Protein, some glucose, water, D3, B12, Omega 3's through food sources, and Mountian Dew its my naughty pleasure....good luck!

I start classes in a week and have been planning my health regimen as well. I'm normally a very health conscious person who exercises and tries to take whole food organic supplements; that is when I can afford them :( I also try to be aware of the fact that too much caffeine can reek havoc on the body so unless I reeeally need it :yawn:, I try to stay away from it. If you have days where it seems like your always feeling drained, you might have some other issues like nutrient depletion or just plain old lack of sleep:anbd:. I plan on at least taking a whole food vitamin, Cell Food drops (minerals, enzymes, and dissolved oxygen), purified omega oils (very important for the brain), and extra whole food B vitamins for stress. I notice that when I stop taking any one of these supplements; especially the B vitamins and Omega oils I get cranky and easily stressed out:grn:

I definitely recommend the Cell Food... www.cellfood.com/cellfood.htm

Unfortunately, the best cure for sleep deprivation is sleeping well and regularly.

The next best thing is good nutrition, supplemental vitamins, and regular activity.

After that, it's down to the last resort stuff. My favorite is caffeine in regular, small amounts. Watch out for energy drinks - they jack you up and then you fall HARD.

It's more important to get a proper night's rest than it is to study. You'll perform better studying for 1 hour and getting 7 to 8 hours of sleep than you will studying for 7 to 8 hours and getting 1 hour of sleep.

B complex vitamins( I use Jamison brand as it has biotin in it also) helps convert the food you eat into energy, many energy drinks such as 5 hour energy are b vitamin based.

@mommywithplenty Jamieson B Complex vitamins (Which ones? B100?)

@ScottE I have insomnia unfortunately :/

@SharonM7 I'll look into the CellFoods...looks interesting.

The general consensus seems to be B vitamins, sleep, and omega-3 oils.

If you have insomnia then you should see a sleep specialist and get that straightened out.

I'm an insomniac too. Sometimes I'll lay in bed for hours straight without dozing. Last week it got really bad. Went to bed at around 10:30 and fell asleep at 4:30. Then I woke up at 5:30 lol.

I'd see a specialist. I tried melatonin supplements but it didn't do much.

@ScottE - Like a somnologist right? Maybe so. I went to the doctors and all they do is prescribe sleep aids.

@mommywithplenty - I may have to look into another different brand. Jamieson seems to be a Canadian brand and seems to be found only in Canada. This means I would have to probably pay more to have it shipped here to the States.

OK, I thought I had it bad but dang...I hope you are seeing a somnologist or doing something to solve your insomnia.

For Melatonin, try sublingual melatonin in liquid form. I heard it is really effective and I am about to try it myself.
