What is excelsior?

Published

It is a provate school that provides a bridge program to LPNs, as well as Paramedics and respirtory Therapists to be able to sit for the NCLEX exam. However, it is not recognized in all states. It is also referred to as "EC"----

when looking for any programs, do your homework first and find out if the program that you are looking at is approved by your BON.

We should also mention that Excelsior is a distance program -- meaning it is not on site at a school. It is done mostly online and at clinical sites.

Excelsior is a distance school, but it is not done online (they do offer some online classes which are expensive and they are all general ed classes) you actually study on your own using their free content guides and recommended textbooks, or you can use study guides from Chancellor's or College Network (you can find them used on Ebay, just make sure they are up to date) then when your ready, you sign up to take the test at a local testing center. At the end of the program you take a 2 1/2 day clinical evaluation.

This is 100% correct. I graduated a few months ago from Excelsior with my ADn.

Caveat: With no structure (such as in a traditional transition program) you can do nothing for years on end, making no progress. I did this. Don't do this.

On the other hand, I have a friend who did her all in under 2 years, working FT.

Check with your BON - CA and CO both have issue with EC, IIRC. TX, my state, does not. Call Exclesior and ask. Then call your BON and ask.

It is improtant to recognize that EC does not teach - they test you on what you already know and what you've learned through independent study. As an LVN for 10 years in TX, where we did 99% of what RNs do, it wasn't that. Consider your own practice and experience.

Can you tell me anything about clinicals. I am enrolled in Excelsior & just about ready to schedule my clinicals? Thanks

They are stressful, no doubt.

You need to grid it out. If you don't know what that is, stop what you're doing immediately and read some here:

You can do it. I believe the current pass rate is 61% for first time attempts. he more you prepare yourself, the more likely you are to be in the 61% group and not the 39%.

When I did mine, 4 out of 6 passed.

Are there any Mississippi students out there enrolled in Excelsior. I am an LPN seriously considering it since I live in North Mississippi and the only RN/ADN program is 40 minutes away and is only offered during the day. It also has a long waiting list.

Check out the Distance Learning Forum, you will find quite a few that are in that program.
