A long time ago in a class one girl there was trying to get me upset and she said something to the effect that if a patient can't pay the medical bill that they can cut their arm off for research purposes. She was trying to prove that I was ignorant and to start an argument. I was careful not to react and I didn't really believe her. As far as I can tell, what she said to me is just an outright lie.
Has anyone here ever heard of anything like this?

No. It doesn't make any sense. Whatever financial value for research a severed arm may have (dubious) is likely offset by the cost of saving the donor's life thus negating the purpose of the whole crazy thing.

I am curious was this said for shock value? Just trying to help you see that sometimes people say things not just for shock value.....maybe they just don't know any better. Of course hospital don't cut off limbs for payment.....at least not in the US.

Sounds like that person someone to ignore. We all have those 1 or 2 idiots that just love to drive you crazy and waste your time with this nonsense. We do not do anything like that here in the USA.

There would certainly be a lot more armless people in the USA.

This reminds me tangentially of the old Lyndon Johnson anecdote in which LBJ is in a local election and wants to smear his opponent. He instructs his campaign manager to spread the rumor that his opponent has been enjoying carnal knowledge of his pigs.
"Lyndon, I can't go around telling people that he's a pig * * * *er!"
"I know, but I want to make him deny it."
This person is either nuts or ummm, gosh, I can't actually think of an alternative. Nuts.
