What caught your attention in the world today?

I came across this is little story today, it's not breaking news.  I suspect that a member of the housekeeping staff knows something about the bomb threat that required the sweep for weapons.

According to police in Secaucus, the bomb threat — which later was determined to be bogus — was called in to Hudson Regional Hospital on July 18. During a search, bomb detection dogs led investigators to an unlocked office closet containing dozens of firearms.

Among the weapons were 11 handguns and 27 rifles or shotguns, according to police. The closet also contained a .45 caliber semi-automatic rifle with a high-capacity magazine that was determined to be an assault rifle, and a 14-round high-capacity handgun magazine.

The arrested the guy the next day.

What the heck do you think this guy was doing? It sounds very ominous that he was keeping those weapons there.

Can't disagree with this.

DeSantis has not been exposed as a liar.  He's a piece of crap and pretty authoritative but not a liar.  He really actually is an intelligent person that knows exactly what he's doing.

Many liars know exactly what they are doing.  Yeah...DeSantis called masks "covid theater" and some nonsense about CRT and the Biden administration.  His lies may be clever but they aren't accidents.

I get what you're saying.   When he says something like "teachers are indoctrinating our children....." he's providing evidence like a teacher with a rainbow heart in her classroom.  To me teachers are teaching inclusiveness and that there are more people in the world that live different lifestyles so what he's saying is untrue.

Still he puts a voice to what people are thinking and to others he speaks the truth.  His voters do not want a rainbow heart in their child's classroom and feel it's indoctrination.  Millennial parents here in Florida have really disappointed me.  I was counting on them to be a huge voting block against him.  But such is not the case.

More on those arrested in Florida for illegally voting.

Ignorance of the law is no excuse so people with felonies should have known there were exceptions.  (I didn't know either to be honest).

But also they were able to register to vote and get voter ID cards so the system from a state level is flawed.

And, doesn't the law say they have to have had intention of breaking the law to vote?

So, that would nullify the "ignorance is no excuse", excuse.  In this case, ignorance is a excuse.

Long, but interesting essay about world population.  I didn't know that this year population will be 8 billion.

I remember growing up there were grave concerns about the "population bomb" in the 60's and 70's.   This was fueled by writer Paul Ehrlich who made many predictions and public appearances.

Now there are actually concerns about population decline in certain countries.  One of the reasons Germany was so welcoming to Syrian immigrants a while back was because of it's declining population.  Japan has entire villages abandoned due to it's aging and declining population.

The US is poised to handle our aging population and lower birth rate with immigration.  A hot topic of course.

But the focus on economic growth does require a steady stream of increasing population.

There is also the idea that our current problems with the planet aren't due to  too many people but capitalism.  I think this might be a fair argument as many decisions are made not with concern about the planet but the stock market.

But the toll on the planet might be what's too great to bear.

California's power grid is expecting demand of more than 51K megawatts; previous record in 2006 was 50K.  Residents are asked to conserve energy with these outages that will last  ~40 mins which would help conserve an extra 1000 megawatts; however the Operator for the power grids said they still need 2 to 3 times more than this to keep power on.

Definitely need a disaster preparedness plan for a majority of EVs

I did know about the 8 billion this year.

I just read the first article you posted.  It was interesting but what was even more interesting were the comments that followed.  Did you read them?

Also, my thought on the first thing we need to do to preserve the planet is eliminate waste.  People waste a lot.  For some, almost everything they have/possess/own is extra.  Excess food/clothing/electronics/cars/jewelry/household items/gadgets/ etc.  And yes I am very aware we NEED food, but I am also very aware that people waste A LOT of food.

Food waste is a thing on a massive scale in rich countries.  When I used to work some with the homeless one of the local groceries stores contributed perfectly good expired food to the kitchen.

So is waste in general.  My sister is part of a group that gets things stores throw out.  A package is ripped, the whole thing gets thrown out.  A pan has a dent, it gets thrown out.  She's gotten silverware, pots and pans, vacuum cleaners, all kinds of toiletries, on and on and on.  She donates a lot of things to hospice and other groups.

Our country isn't very committed to planning for future disasters... that costs money.

They are anticipating a need for a new covid vaccine every year for the currently circulating strain. Thank the gods for this RNA technology.
