What is the best thing to put on diaper rash?

Well, this is what I ended up doing...(we live several miles out in the country and lazy today not wanting to go to town just for cream) so this is what we did and it has helped...baking soda bath...let him run around with no diaper on for a while...then found some medicated Gold Bond baby powder which contains corn starch I think. It was left over from my 11 y.o. son so I don't know how good it will be (don't know if powders expire) and he has only had one big poopie today and thankfully, it was formed!

To other moms: Did you ever feed your little ones yogurt when they had diarrhea? My little one loves YoBaby and gets a little carton of it with his noon meal.

Thanks for all the advice....oh to answer someone up above, I am a geriatrics nurse and we used this stuff called "Selan" which was basically zinc oxide...then they also had tubes of "Calmoseptine" too. Since I no longer work there, I can't "borrow" any now.

I will be back in town every other day of this week, so I'm going to go hunt down the Butt Paste after reading about it on the 'Net. I think that is what my sister uses on my niece...but now she is potty trained.

Anyway, thanks to all!

What ever you do...DO NOT go to that baby center web site. OMGoodness.

Which site is that? I belong to a lot of parenting boards and babymed...not sure about babycenter though.

Monistat 7 or something like it. I also kept her bottom open to air at night (she just laid on top of the diaper). quick results!!!!

Every time my son went on antibiotics for whatever reason, he went to day care w/an 8 pack of 4oz yoplait. I asked her to feed it to him @ least 2x.

Pretty soon, any kid she took care of got the same thing when they had abx. Seemed to keep them from getting a tummy ache/diarrhea.

Balmex, hands down the best !!!

In patients, I'm a big fan of Calmoseptine - sticks, protects from moisture, and helps with itching as well.

I don't know about babies... my brother is ten years younger, but I don't recall him ever having a diaper rash - same with my niece.

It's the combination of the urine with the feces that changes the pH and causes diaper dermatitis.

A barrier cream based product is not meant to be scrubbed off with every diaper change, but is meant to stay on and protect the skin so that it may heal even when the poo continues to keep coming. Then you can used a water based gel product to help with the irritation and make it feel better. This will wipe off as you clean the baby gently with each diaper change. When the barrier appears to be coming off, do a good cleanse and then reapply.

I tried just about everything out there to treat diaper rashes for my little boy and I liked Desitin (the thick stuff, not the creamy or clear), A&D and Boudreaux Butt Paste the best. Surprisingly enough, I found that the best thing to PREVENT diaper rashes in the first place was good ol' store brand cornstarch baby powder. So cheap, so easy to use, and I felt so stupid for not just trying that in the first place. Once I started putting that in his diaper instead of slathering ointment on his butt, he literally never got another diaper rash. Hope this helps!

Oh, and I used Lotrimin AF for his yeast infections. This was what his NP told me to use. Worked like a charm.

So, does anyone here know if baby powder expires?

Thanks for all the good suggestions!

Our CNAs swear by a combo of Desitin, A&D Oint. and Vasoline.

When my kids were of that age some foods seem to really irritate even if they were not allergic to them.

Never tried butt paste but have heard great raves bout it.

Things do get worse, they grow up to be teens and you just wish that the worst thing you had to worry about was a sore bum.

I am the mother of two and have had the best success with balmex. Others have also worked but the balmex brand has seemed to work the fastest on my children.
