just curious, what area of nursing do you paln to go into when you graduate? i plan to work in the icu or emergency departments and then go on to be a crna!!!
I am not sure what area of nursing interests me the most.
I like the fast pace of the ER, the joy and excitement of OB and the contact, that is so special in LTC. I enjoyed my OR rotation and I felt that the NICU nurses I met were truly unique. They really help those parents in every way to bond with their sick infants. I also like the way that the CCU nurses interact with the patients and their families. Oncology nursing, It takes a very special person to deal with cancer and the patients that have it. I recently went with the local air medical unit for a "ride along" program. It was awesome!
The best part about nursing is that I don't have to be confined to only one area. I may have a career that spans 30+ years and several different areas. (God willing)
Im all up in the air... i definately want to work with the babies..id like to go into paed's, possibly at HSC (toronto), as my love loyalty and life belong to them, maybe labour and delivery - complex pregnancies and such, or possible a nurse-midwife..(can you tell i have no idea what i want to do)
Best of luck to all!!
ROCKS!! Just got through that rotation last semester (only one semester left!! WOOHOO!!) and I really dug it! So I'll probably do that per diem cause I like it, and then I'm thinking ER or critical care with the ultimate goal of becoming a flight nurse... Ditto on the perpetual motion, mzmckim...:)
My main interest is Pediatrics. That was my interest when I started nursing school. It was still my interest after my peds rotation and it is still my interest today. NOW, I still have 3 more rotations left so I am not totally done knocking any areas out. With the upcoming semester I have 1)Med-surg, 2)Adult ICU, 3) Psych so we will just have to wait and see.
I also have a strong interest in community/public and home health. So I am going to do peds in the hospital setting for a few years and then switch into the community/public health setting. I think my true passion will be working with children and families in the community/public health setting and I would like to become a nurse practitioner in that area.
Part of me wants to work in the NICU (my own daugher was a preemie); part of me wants to work ER because of the excitement and diversity; part of me wants to work in the OR because I kinda like the blood-and-guts stuff; but lately I've been really thinking about oncology because I think a good nurse can make such a difference in a patient's quality of life and emotional outlook, which in turn can drastically affect outcome. Plus cancer as a disease fascinates the heck out of me... But I guess I should really actually start nursing school before making a final decision :)
