Anyone out there anxiously waiting with me for news of acceptance to the October 1st cohort for Cedars Sinai? The excitement and suspense is really tough for me! My "nursing file" was complete and ready to go on February 2nd, which feels like about 25 years ago. All my eggs are in the WGU basket...I don't really have other options. I'm trying to pass the time by re-reading my anatomy and Microbiology textbooks. Also taking others' advice about relaxing and enjoying free time in case I do start school soon. I'd love to hear from anyone else waiting. Good luck to all who have applied!
GeekkeeG,
I asked my advisor about the 12 student acceptance and according to him, they accept 12 students everywhere but California. They accept 12 because they anticipate that about 2 students will almost always drop out due to family emergencies or wet feet. However, in California, it's so competitive that they rarely have students willingly drop out. Thus, in California, they choose 10, not 12. I hope this relieves your worry! It made me feel better, that's for sure.
So, I just had a call with WGU.
I asked about it to clarify.
She said that right now - there are at least twelve of us (sometimes they do more than twelve and she's going to look into it).
She says it's going to come down to a few things as to whether or not we move on with this cohort (of course, one being whether we finish this term on time): How we perform at bootcamp, our interview (over Skype) with the nursing department personnel that make the decision and our communication with our student mentor.
- She said to perform well at bootcamp (and she's mailing me the information about it soon, which will include videos)
- She says to be prepared for what you're going to learn at bootcamp *before* we go that first weekend by watching the videos and whatnot and to make sure that (especially for people like me who have been doing those things for years - CNAs/LVNs/etc) we do them *exactly* how WGU wants us to and NOT the way we've been doing them. She said this is sometimes an issue for people with more healthcare experience.
- She said to maintain strong communication with your student mentor, because what they have to say about you goes far into the decisions about you moving on.
- She said to treat your Skype interview like a job interview and be professional (in appearance as well as behavior/communication)
She did also say that it's uncommon for an entire cohort to not have a couple of people that just don't move onward with their first cohort - including during any of the BSN (non-prelicensure) courses - and that it's very common for people to get hung up somewhere along the way.
So basically, I'm going to start watching those videos as soon as I get the links and making sure that I can un-train myself of years of bad habits...then I'm going to make sure I'm 100% familiar with my student statement/resume (as it feels like I wrote it forever ago) before my interview and hope for the best.
But, yes, theoretically - if ALL of us perform well in all of the above, two of us will likely not get to move on - although that's never happened to her knowledge. :)
Yeah, essentially I think that if the three of us are as overachieving as we seem here, we'll be fine.
Also of note: they usually pair people up during bootcamp. So, here's hoping that we all get someone who is attentive to detail and can catch us when we do something out of the order that WGU wants us to do it in. :)
