WGU Prelicensure-Cedars Sinai-Oct, 2014

Nursing Students Western Governors

Updated:   Published

Anyone out there anxiously waiting with me for news of acceptance to the October 1st cohort for Cedars Sinai? The excitement and suspense is really tough for me! My "nursing file" was complete and ready to go on February 2nd, which feels like about 25 years ago. All my eggs are in the basket...I don't really have other options. I'm trying to pass the time by re-reading my anatomy and Microbiology textbooks. :wideyed: Also taking others' advice about relaxing and enjoying free time in case I do start school soon. I'd love to hear from anyone else waiting. Good luck to all who have applied!

Jeeez, I guess I was lucky to get picked! :o LOL

What a bunch of nerds! :)

Good luck, I'm crossing my fingers for you, and it's not just because you're Dobby.

I nerds, and Dobby. :geek:

I'm proud to be a nerd, and I cried when Dobby died. :arghh:

I joked to my friend that 1/4 of our cohort is definitely meeting the nerd quota.

I'm curious to find out about the other 9 of us. Wish they all stumbled in here and chimed in so we can see if we're just a herd of nerds.

Me too! I've been waiting months for someone to start a thread. I gave up and started my own. When do we meet for the two-day boot camp, do you suppose? Where we learn and then get tested on our "foundation" skills? Did you find out in your intake interview?

No idea!

I also have questions:

-What's the uniform we'll need for clinicals (assuming I get in, that is)?

-iTouch? Can we just use a smartphone, or are they trying to get us to have something with nothing but wifi for confidentiality?

-If we finish the course (I think it's just one) that we need to apply to the clinical portion, can we just apply at that time and find out if we're in, or do we have to wait for everyone to get their applications in?

I'm sure there's more. It's like a constant barrage of questions that plop into my head when I think about it. lol

Well, this is what I know/think:

I read in an ancient post (2011?) that we have to buy scrubs from Dove and they are a specific color and must be embroidered with the logo, etc. Best to wait for instructions on that one, although I am chomping at the bit to shop online at Scrubs & Beyond.

The iTouch is some kind of clinical technology, not the Apple thing. Don't remember why I think this but I read it somewhere. Maybe this is a pulse ox?

There are actually 9 pre-nursing courses to be completed prior to acceptance into the nursing program:

Biochemistry (unless you already have this)

Introduction to Nursing Clinical Skills

Nutrition for Contemporary Society (again, you may have taken this)

Introduction to Nursing Arts and Science

Organizational Systems: Safety and Regulation

Medical Dosage Calculations

Pharmacology

Introduction to Probability and Statistics

Information Management and the Application of Technology

A total of 19 CU's. :cyclops:

So I'm thinking the first six months will be a bit busy.

Then if we pass all of those courses and the foundations assessment, plus have a recommendation from our first-term mentor, pass the drug test and background check, etc., we are accepted into the nursing program. I also read that most people accepted to the pre-nursing program usually go on into the nursing program without incident unless they just don't pass the coursework.

Most of this I have read and researched until I'm exhausted - there aren't many prelicensure people around to answer questions. So my information may be erroneous. And when I'm on the phone with my awesome enrollment counselor, I forget to ask questions.

Anyhoodle, hope this helps some. :)

Update: I just researched the iTouch a bit (Google is my friend.) It's being used in clinical settings quite a lot. 's website says an iTouch or a handheld device compatible with Nursing Central Software - something used at Cedars perhaps? I know Cedars uses paperless charts and EMRs. Either way it appears that we will need something with a larger interface than a smartphone.

I just finished my intake "interview" and I can answer a few of your questions.

Our bootcamp will probably take place on the second weekend of October and our testing for that bootcamp is the following weekend!

As far as the iTouch, I was told as long as we have any type of smartphone (Apple or Android), we are fine. However, the app we have to purchase is close to $300... Apparently it will be useful for us in our future careers as a resource.

Odd, the program guide makes it seem like only this one matters: Introduction to Nursing Clinical Skills (1 competency unit) is an admission requirement which must be completed prior to applying for admission into the nursing program.

Regarding the iTouch: I didn't look terribly deep, but I only found information about the Apple product. At first I assumed it was going to be a medical device similar to an iStat or something, but....couldn't find it. That coupled with what "the iTouch units and associated software" in the program guide made me think it was going to be the Apple product, I guess. :/

AHHH, we'll see! lol

And, yeah, I was just curious which color we get to be donning - and if we have to have white shoes. LOL ;)

Cool! I hope that the weekend thing is a trend. That makes it handy for those of us who work M-F. :)

Thanks, grrl! Obviously I knew nothing about iTouch! The app is $300? Ouch...guess I'll be asking for cash for my birthday, Christmas, Mother's Day, for the next 2 1/2 years.

I have some lovely NurseMates white shoes from CNA clinicals...I think they're in the garage somewhere collecting dust. Please tell me we don't have to wear white shoes.

Hahaha!!!

I'm just borrowing it all to add to my pile of student loan debt. Although, I'm going to try to pay 1k/mo after I get a couple months of cushion.

That's why I asked about the uniform, though. Need to start the 6 month hunt for some white ones that I don't hate. Lol
