Hi all,
I'm new to allnurses and haven't seen a thread on Western yet for 2015. Just wanted to start it to see who else is applying so we can all give each other moral support!
I saw that every year the application deadline is postponed? Do you think it will be happening this year as well?
Hey all, I went to EAOD and was accepted and sent my deposit a while ago. However, I am getting really weary about the fact that the masters portion is online. Nursing is such a hands on and collaborative profession, how can they expect us to learn what we need to succeed in this field sitting behind a computer screen? So far western is the only school i have gotten into, but recently i have been thinking of withdrawing and getting an absn from a state school or something ... Any advice?

Personally for me I'm not too concerned about it because I know we start clinicals fairly early in the school year, and also, after 1.5 years... we will be able to get our RN license... so that 1.5 year that it is online-based, we have the opportunity to find a job and work as RNs and that's is the most hands-on you can probably get.
@bluefossil...you will not just be sitting behind a computer screen. You are expected to get a position as an RN as soon as you pass your boards so you will be working as a nurse the entire time you are going through the master's portion. You also have seminar weekends to come together as a cohort. It's much easier to hold a full time job when you have the flexibility of an online program. You can work whenever you need to and do your classwork around that schedule. If you had to come to campus every day for class it would be pretty difficult to make a work schedule. Plus, what you do in the simulation lab on campus is helpful, but taking care of an actual patient is very different. It makes more sense to spend more of your time in the hospital and less of your time sitting in a lecture hall. You will still learn the same information you would while sitting in a lecture. You just have to hold yourself accountable for getting the work done. They work in online coursework early on in the semester so that you start to get used to what it is like.
Hi everyone! Is anyone else debating between Western and Columbia? Both programs have a very different stance on what it takes to be a successful FNP. I am wondering if any current students can shed light on the distance learning portion. I definitely like how Western's distance learning portion allows flexibility to work, however I know that most hospitals prefer nurses with BSN or higher. Since we would only be certified as RNs without the BSN or MSN at that point, what happens to students who cannot find jobs despite intense efforts?

I asked faculty the same exact question! I was worried about job placement following the NCLEX. They stated that majority of students found jobs within 1-2 months. Since the institution has a network of various clinical sites and a well-known reputation, students were able to land jobs. Congrats on getting into both Western and Columbia!
Hi! I just spoke with a faculty and heard a different stat. I heard that 93% of the class find jobs within 6 months of graduation from the MSN program so some students go an entire year (after pre licensure) without finding a job as an RN, which kind of worries me. Also, Western is not highly ranked so the reputation can be advantageous to those living and working in SoCal, but what happens when students move elsewhere? Any advice?
