I just got accepted into the FNP MSN-E program at Western University of Health Sciences. Has anyone gone through this program? If so, could you please share what you liked and disliked about the program. Any feedback would be helpful.
Thank you!

This is my first choice too! I applied to a school in Northern California, but I found out that the program is going to be finished after the 2015 law change and I would have to go and get my DNP, which would suck! It would add another 2 years to a 3 year program. That's just too much time to be in school without being about to get a full time job.
I really like this program and how it is really designed to help you get a career and get you oriented with the field while still being in school. I would be moving all the way from Illinois for this program, it would be a huge change and a huge opportunity.
Moving from IL, very commendable and is a leap of faith. =D Did you apply to Sammuel Merritt? I was thinking to apply there also since my inlaws live up there. You mentioned a new law requiring a DNP. I am curious about what do you mean exactly? Are you planning on going the NP route? or Are you planning on going into education?
Here is what I found on the http://www.aacn.nche.edu/DNP/DNPFAQ.htm
"Will dnp programs prepare nurses to assume roles as physicians?
No. Nursing and medicine are distinct health disciplines that prepare clinicians to assume different roles and meet different practice expectations. DNP programs will prepare nurses for the highest level of nursing practice. Transitioning to the DNP will not alter the current scope of practice for advanced practice nurses as outlined in each state's Nurse Practice Act. "
Yes, I did apply to Samuel Merritt. However, looking back on it, the program is twice as long, twice as expensive and not nearly as hands on learning oriented as Western U. If you look up the wikipedia page for FNP, it talks about a new law that will take effect for 2015. It states that if you are not a board certified/ practicing NP you need to take additional coursework to obtain a DNP, which is another 2 years after the MSN NP program. The Samuel Merritt FNP program will not be finished before this law takes effect.
Some of the people admitted to the program are already discussing the DNP requirement because they know they won't meet the 2015 deadline. So while I was upset to hear that I was put on the waitling list, i'm not really anymore because I have found other programs that I like better, that are cheaper and will be completed prior to 2015.

Thanks. I heard talk of it but wasn't certain on a date. Thanks for the post ILnurse. I hope we both get in and can be in the same cohort.
Just came across this thread and was wondering if I could get feedback from the accepted MSN-E students. Likes? Dislikes? Did the loans cover the tuition and were you able to get any scholarships or grant money? Whats do students think about the online portion? How many days are you in class and what days/hours are clinicals? Any advice and feedback would be greatly appreciated!
Hello I am in the MSN-E class of 2014
There is no scholarship or grants awarded to grad students...if there are they are by private organization...and I am sure it will not cover much since the program is very expensive
My advise...take out the full amount, it is worth it in the end
the program is intense (is an accelerated program) it is not easy but is doable.
let me know if u have any other questions abt western U
I have an interview with Western U coming up. Does anyone know if the interview is given as a group or individual. The caller said the interview check in time is 7:45am and would last to about 12pm. Does anyone know if that is the actual interview or if there are tours and other events that take place as well.
Thanks.

Volunteered at 2 hospitals in the past year and have 2 home care PTs. I'm anxious and nervous as well. I don't know if this is enough experience since I'm not a science major (bachelors) but business instead. This application will shape my future and my family is riding on this. I've never wanted anything more in my life. How about you? Can you tell me more about you? Let's keep on posting if we get any word from Western U.
