West Coast University

Hello! Is there anyone who is going thru West Coast University in LA/OC? How was your experience with the school? Thanks!

Hi guys Im interested to go into wcu in north hollywood, any insight?

Ivanam: I wonder, how do you afford to go to WCU with that much tuition. To be honest I have no one that can help me with my tuition. I can only depend with the pal/cal grant. ALthough I am not even sure if I can get help with that. I have parth tme job now and cant really afford my apt. I have been on the waiting list for so long and Im tired of it. Im hoping to get a loan. I heard you can only get 20000 for subsidised loan and where else you can get help with the money? does the wcu offer private loan? any suggestion?

Twenty thousand from one hundred thirty-two thousand, leaves only one hundred twelve thousand left to finance. Are you sure this is going to be feasible?

Here are my concerns about this school:

  • Is it accredited by a reputable organization?

  • Does it offer its students clinicals at decent and desirable hospitals that future grads would want to work at? (Whenever the job market improves...)

  • Is it recognized and taken seriously by employers or is it looked at as just another "degree mill"?

  • Is it recognized and taken seriously by other schools? Can I transfer to other schools/pursue further education at other schools after earning a degree from WCU? Or would I need to start all the way from the beginning?

The school has a reputation for being very expensive, so I just want to make sure it has all the points listed covered and taken care of. Thanks in advance for any help/info. :)

EDIT: One more question.

For those that attended/are attending/will attend WCU, what would make you choose this over Mount St. Mary's?

Mount Saint Mary's has a more established and well recognized program. I went to WCU and they are still working out the kinks. If I had to choose between the two. Mount Saint Mary's all the way.

Think of each Semester at WCU being over 10K. + Interest.

Hope this helps.

Did you transfer directly from WCU to Mount St. Mary's or did you have to start over? Does Mount St. Mary's meet the points I listed above?

I have been trying to get a hold of the admission personnel for over 2 weeks now. They are always not available because they are talking to other students or not in their office. I have left my information with them several times to never get a call back. I am really frustrated about how little information they provide on the website and how difficult it is to get straight forward answers from them for simple questions such as: HOW do I apply? HOW MUCH is the tuition? WHAT are the requirements?

Is anyone else having a problem getting a hold of them or have I just been very unlucky?

hi there! :) i am new to this forum and i am planning to transfer to WCU after having taken as many prerequisites as i can from a community college. i should be done by spring 2011. i'm going for their straight BSN program. yes, the price scares me ($75,000+), but it better be good, LOL.

I'm planning on doing the same thing! Maybe we'll get in for the same term :)

hi christy! i'm going for july (if there is one) or august. i haven't spoken with their financial aid rep, i'm not eligible for any grants so my only way to pay for school is through scholarships and private loans. :/

:redbeathe:yeah::D

So I think I am going to start West Coast Universitys program in Feb of 2011. So I should graduate 2013. :) That is if I pass everything. Most if not all of my classes trasfered. You need ot go into the office where the advisors are at the Ontario campus (thats where I am going), to get a print out of the classes that they want you to have.

You dont need to have any pre reqs in order to get into the program. BUT- You do need to take the HESI exam, and score above a 82% I think. :) So study a bit for that. Its math, reading, comprehension. Easy stuff you should already know how to do.

As of now, I am taking a statistics class and the epidemiolgy class to get those knocked off. I am also taking the classes at a private university (which too is expensive).

No matter how you look at it the price for WCU is just about the same as Cal Baptist and Loma Linda. They too want about 17-20,000 a semester!! So you do that for about three years with each year having 2 semesters and your looking at about 120,000! And that doesnt even come with books and uniforms.

At least WCU provides you with the books and uniforms that you will be needing. Take all your pre reqs there if you havent done so already. Or if you are trying to lower the cost of the tutiton then take them at another school. Knock out as many as you possibly can. I am at about 110,000.00. But- I should be down to about 90 or 80 once I get the math and epidem. class finished. So thats a good thing. And I can finish in less then 3 years.

If you want to start now, then look into WCU. I had a lot of mixed feelings about it, but hey school is school. I have been in private school most of my life, and it does add up. Ill probably put all my loans TOGETHER so that way I can pay them off in an organized fashion. Im only 23 too, so I know I have time. Plus I am working, and plan to work unitl I can no longer do so. My job is flexible and they know I want to become a nurse one day.

Private loans are only available thru Sallie Mae (and you have to make like 20 dollar monthly payments), and they are also avilable thru Wells Fargo.

WCU only deals with WELLS FARGO, so unless you have a Grandma or Grandpa/Aunt or Parents to help you pay your way thru this program, then you WILL NEED TO TAKE out a student private laon and probably have a cosigner. If you cant do any of that, then please save your time for another school. Your only wasting your own time if you cant get the fin aid. AND I REALLY HONESLY MEAN THAT YOU SHOULD BE ABLE TO KNOW IF YOU can afford or NOT.

I think the Ontario campus is very nice. I cant wait to start in Feb. Id like to hear from students that are at the Ontario campus, and what do you all think of it?!?!?

GOOD LUCK to everyone that wants to get into ANY program! Make sure you do your research ahead of time to save yoruself LOTS of time in the long haul.

Yes I have to choose this over St Marys because I havent passed the TEAS, and I dont even know what thier pass rate is. Plus WCU is a lot closer to me and will be a lot cheaper in the long haul.

YES THEY ARE ACCREDITED! I just emailed the Dean and I alos got the correct informarion off the actual nursing board website. You can EVEN CALL and double check. Just google it and do yoru research. Make some phoine calls. No one on here will know that answer unless they have researched it.

Every NURSING LICENSE is taken serious!

My goodness people need to stop thinking about that. I know a girl who got a job at Kaiser, with an ASSOCIATEs from RCC over the girl from Loma Linda....HELLO PRIVAET VS. THE CITY COLLEGE.

Theres a lot more to getting that nursing job then just yoru degree and a piece of paper stating where you went.

They also have a lot of hospitals because they have three different campuses that sprawl out from LA to OC to ONTARIO/Corona/Norco. They are in a good distance form each other and there are a lot of hospitals in each range. :)

Hope this helps. ;):redbeathe
