A while ago, a group of Italian doctors and nurses stripped down to their skivvies for a calendar in order to raise funds for, and generate public awareness of, the need for cancer research.
No Brad Pitts or George Clooney types. Just a lot of overly tight tighty whities and expanded bellies drooping precariously over boxer short elastic waists. The best picture from the article (Cancer Research in Boxers: Italian Doctors Strip to Reveal Funding Shortfalls - SPIEGEL ONLINE) is the two doctors studiously examining an MRI, while clad in their unmentionables. The nurses appear in the pictorials as well but their faces are not shown - just their backs as they sit in their bras and panties.
So the question is: Would you have appeared in the calendar for such a worthy cause? I'm sure our patients subscribe to the old adage," Turnabout is fair play."
Well, would you???
First of all....I can't find the picture just the article!
Second, a benefit of old age is accepting your body....yeah my upper arms and belly sag even though I weigh the same. Get over it.
Thirdly, health care professionals expect patients to expose their own bodies, turn about is fair play.
I would do it.
I saw the pictures. I love it. It really brings home how vulnerable patients feel. I didn't realize the patients would be fully clothed. It is a powerful message about being a patient. I can't express myself enough....I LOVE IT.
Your view is astute and well taken. The calendar is more than a humorous effort rooted in a very sobering subject. It does drive home the vulnerability of patients and the whole modesty issue. Some handle it better than others. I find that although we have a job to do, we as health care providers are often somewhat callous and presumptuous when it comes to such issues, especially when it comes to men. Modesty is very important to some men, especially in a healthcare environment where the support staff is comprised primarily of females. If they complain, they're viewed as "unmanly." It's a little unfair.
