Me too Peeps...and I love IGNORE..:)

If I am the only nurse to dare use 'tough love' on my patients, then let that be my mark...perhaps they will think about what I'm telling them when I choose to empower THEM. I use 'tough love techniques on:

my own ADHD child

my addict patients

my alcoholic patients

my morbidly obese patients

my chronic illness/failure to thrive patients(COPD, cardiac cripples, etc)

my manipulative patients

my psych patients

When we 'do' for people who can 'do' for themselves, what is the message we give them?

It's a message that they do not deserve or cannot handle things; and are not capable, and it reinforces their need to continue the manipulation/dependent behavior.

I agree with Peeps and Brownie, there IS a lot of psychology in human illness and as nurses it is our duty to help our patients to the highest level of function possible. :)

Catlady, I empower my patients, I also choose NOT to get sucked into their sickness. I suspect you have issues with obesity and should explore them. No malice intended, just an observation. Peace. :)

Mattsmom,

Yes!...........It sets the role of both the caregiver and the patient. It sets the tone for this and future tx courses.

It makes it worse!

It is detrimental to the tx course. The easy way out is rarely ever really the easy way out.

LOLOLOL..omg,I am laughing my head off at all these posts....Amy,you do ROCK!!!!Gonna have to share this with some of my nursing friends...lol..you guys are great!!

wanna hear a good one? about 18 years ago as a very agreeable, hard working nursing tech (it's true i was 19 and very energetic and eager to please!), a pt. called me for the millionth time to have me straighten her covers. it was on a night when we had had a code, lots of wonderful folks w/ diarrhea, and the other tech was "hiding" in some of her pt's rooms . anyhow this a&o, ambulatory, lived alone, little old lady was yanking my chain big time. i strode into her room at about 10:30 after tucking her in w/ her nightly back rub and smiled sweetly at her, as i pulled up her sheets and said " well mrs xyz, you'll be home tomorrow and then you have to do this yourself. goodnight and have a good sleep." golly gee, one of the "laziest" and i mean laziest (i can appreciate this now as an rn for 15 years) wrote me up when this whiney little old lady told her minister-son that "the mean little nursie wouldn't help mother to the bathroom when she felt dizzy." this nurse who i had done many things for, such as performing ekg's, etc. (her responsibility) and who was complaining to me about giving meds to this whiney little granny just minutes before this "incident" went to our manger w/ this pt's. complaints. so nice to be stabbed in the back! when i found out who it was (don't know how i had the nerve to do this), i began talking about it at the desk and told the other staff how upset i was and turned to her and said i knew she didn't do it, as she had also complained about how whiney this woman was. she got a little red and BOY DID IT FEEL GOOD to see her squirm. talk about eating your young!
