Weed-smoking roommate

Ok, so summer is coming up and I know this means that local agency work in south Florida will soon dry up. So, once again I'm getting ready to do a travel assignment outside the state. I've decided to try finding my own apartment and taking the housing stipend instead of taking the company housing because I could save a lot of money this way. BUT, then there's the hassle of doing a short-term lease for a furnished apartment, paying a hefty deposit, and hooking up utilities, etc. So, after reading a few posts on here about the option of renting a room I decided to look into this.

I've been looking at ads on Craigslist and some of the roommate situations I found there seem interesting. However, I'm kinda nervous about moving in with a total stranger that I meet on a website. One prospect I was talking to sounded great and I was going to sign a lease with him... until he mentioned that he's looking for somebody who's '420-friendly'. I didn't know what that means so I had to ask. He told me that he smokes weed regularly, but that he only does it outside the house. The place is an awesome set-up and the rent is pretty good. But the weed-smoking is a deal-breaker. Even though I'm not smoking it myself, if I inhale the passive smoke and if there's a spot drug test at the hospital, its going to show up. Worse still, if the place gets busted the cops probably won't believe that I'm not somehow involved myself. And if that happens, I might as well say goodbye to my license.

Now, I'm back to thinking that maybe the roommate thing isn't such a great idea. Was wondering if anyone who has done it successfully could give me some pointers.

The drug test thing would definitely be the deal breaker for me. You will test + if you are sharing living quarters with a habitual MJ user. And who wants to risk their license for that? I never traveled but I would think there would be less headache in hooking up utilites than worrying about loss of my license.

second hand smoke can intend give you a positive test

i would look around for cheaper diggs or another roommate

you brobably won't be sorry

I would tell your roommate that if they smoke weed again, you'll call the police yourself.

Meanwhile, be searching for another place to live. Don't worry about getting a place on Craig's list. Meet the person in advance, and see how they keep their home, that can be a good indicator, and trust your gut.

Having a roommate who smokes weed won't make you test positive for it. Unfortunately, I've had the same problem! (with a daily, heavy smoker, mostly outside, but not always) I've passed drug tests for school and work with no problem, but I was completely paranoid about it. My biggest concern, after passing the drug test, was that the smell would get on my clothes and I'd show up to class or CLINICALS smelling like marijuana. That would not have been good!

I would avoid the situation if possible. The guy may say he smokes outside, but is he going outside when it's raining or snowing or really hot or really cold? If he mentioned it in his roommate add, I'm guessing it a pretty big part of his life.

People who smoke a lot of weed also don't seem concerned with things like paying bills and reality.

Call me a snitch but I would report a nurse to the Board of Nursing who admitted using an illegal drug.

And of course not room with this person.

Patient care could be at risk.

Sorry to disagree TurtleSoup, but I have seen this from a different angle!

My darling wee Brother, (34 yo), has smoked hash since he was a teen, and has a managerial position..although not in nursing! He has a pipe or two in the evening..does not agree with nicotine, so would not roll it in a ciggie, and grows his own pure cannabis, so smokes no s**t! he does not drink, is not in any way disfunctional...but this is just part of what he does for chill out. Very, very well mannered, intelligent, good man, savvy individual, who has his life and bills and reality sorted!

In fact..more sorted than me..and i would not touch the stuff!!:lol2:

this is just MY experience of being close to someone who smokes weed...I know others will have different views, but its my tuppence worth!

I just read my post back..i have to agree though that if the weed smoker held a life in their hands through direct patient care...I dont think I would be so tolerant of his habit........

Agree. It's against the Nurse Practice Act here in Florida as well.

I used to think the same way...but then I got a little closer to the situation and now I don't. There may be some functional pot heads out there, but I think there are more that use it to cope when they should be improving their lives, instead. I also think the stuff makes the user STUPID and forgetful over time.

Hey.TurtleSoup....I only have experience of one person close to me and how he manages his life!

Others I face in the line of work are addicted to more than hash.

I agree with your views..but just felt that I wanted to share that my wee bro' is ok and Does do reality, even with his habit.

Well you obviously aren't as bitter as I am about it which might be a good thing. ;)
