Nurses LPN/LVN

I live in Iowa. Well we got a very nice snow storm the week. I was not on the schedule to work, but 3 weeks ago said I would do some more training to help me with some of my work. Because of the storm I got a hold of my boss to tell them. I know if I would of been on the schedules I would of I stayed at work. My boss seems made at me for nit being able to come in to work. My I just say my way to work the dot said travel is not advised and a tow band in place. I told my boss I would make the hours of training up. Yet she still seems mad. How can I make things better and not feel like **** about not making it into work?

I live in middle Tennessee. We don't get huge accumulations of snow like y'all up north, but if we get a mere 2" here, everything shuts down. Our roads are not built to deal with snow, and we have miles with no shoulder, deep ravines, etc. Plus, nobody here knows how to drive on snow, no matter how much they spend on their 4 wheel drive trucks. We also get more ice than snow around here. That makes it even worse.

To answer the question...there is no job important enough to risk my life or the expensive destruction of my car, to make me venture out on that mess to work or anywhere. I'm not willing to take a chance of hurting myself or messing up my car to go in and work short-staffed. If that makes me a bad person, oh well...

I know Lisa, I'm waiting on the mayhem here in Mississippi, there's a whole generation who hasn't driven on ice here! No real ice storm in over 10-12 years, just snow.

That said, I would bite the bullet, drive early, really slow, and battle the weather here. I work ED, and I know they are going to be jumping in that kind of weather. I am selective on how I would judge call-ins, I got a hardy crew:)

You mean most people don't treat their back yard as a spare freezer??? My turkey and ice cream are out on the patio table, and frozen rock solid. My favourite story is about the Australian who thought Canadians were so energy efficient that we all had electric cars. Broke his heart when he found out the plugs at the front are for the block heater cords.
Too funny Fiona!!! No, here it gets up to 75 degrees even if it was 18 last night, wouldn't work- but that's a good idea:)

hey now, how did you know I have a turkey riding around in the van with me? I have no indoor freezer space left, but I have a great shed outside that has come in handy.

Where else would you keep holiday leftovers???

Why in the world do some areas outlaw snow chains?

By the way, there are tooooooo many critters here to leave out food.

I had a gorgeous long haired Calico adopt Tag and Me, but I never know what's going to be eating out of her bowl(Squirrels, Raccoons, Skunks, Opossums, Armadillos, Bobcats, and even a POT BELLIED PIG!!!-escapee from neighbor's yard!)

This thread reminds me, in Norway and Sweden, you can go through the drive-thru of a Fast Food Restaurant on a snow mobile, or dog sled.

I agree that there's much to be said for diving cautiously, but it's ridiculous to expect staff to purchase FWD/ATV vehicles, esp. in this economy and when jobs are less than stable. If my job required me to have special transportation, then they could jolly well pay for it.

Nobody said anything about an employer expecting us to have "special transportation". Where I live pretty much every second vehicle is either a suv or a pickup truck. When there is snow on ground six months of the year a Ford Fiesta or Mazda Miata is a summer car and shouldn't be on the road in winter. Right now we have windrows along the roads that are over four feet high, it's still snowing and it's -23C.

A previous poster did.

If you value your life, you spend the money to have a safe vehicle. Northern living allows for two seasons....winter and summer. Most people drive trucks out of necessity. Otherwise, you'd end up in the ditch upside down. This actually happened to me, and it was very very scary. I was with a friend, and we're lucky to be alive. We were told 25 hours until rescue. After 4+ hours in frigid temperatures, a good samaritan pulled us out.

Thanks for helping a dunce Mississippi Nurse:)

My first experience with them was renting some to cross the Great Smoky Mountain National Park to get to Mom and Dad's for Christmas. I was thinking that, but wasn't sure.
