Wearing scrubs at the gym??

Nursing Students Male Students

Published

I went to the gym today and saw a male nurse lifting in his scrubs. I was a little bothered by it because I would think it would be unsanitary for someone to be working out in their hospital uniform, so I approached him and this is what I said:

me: excuse me, wouldn't it be unsanitary to wear that working out?

him: oh they're clean. who are you?

me: oh, I'm just a student

After I tell him this he kind of chuckles and rolls his eyes and goes on with his work out.

Besides being rude, do you think this was wrong? How would another gym go-er know that it is clean if he did not tell them? For all I know it could have MRSA or some other pathogen he came into contact with. I realize people go in their uniforms to subway or whatever restaurant to eat, but this is the gym - where I'm lying down on the same bench as him. Am i overreacting or was this unprofessional of him?

Well I know this is the men's forum and an old post but... Are scrubs comfortable for lifting in or not? I plan to start a RN program in January and think my only time for lifting will be right after school or over lunch. We have to wear scrubs for lecture and lab days as well as clinicals. From the way the schedule for clinicals are I either will not lift those days or have a hour break and not be in a rush. Feedback on lifting while in school is appreciated as my only me time is in the power rack and having to give up lifting is my greatest fear about going back to school. Thanks bros.

Depends on the scrubs I guess, but I haven't come across any that would allow for a good "stretch" when you lift. I wouldn't recommend it for the sake of not ripping your scrubs lol. I never work out in scrubs. Last time I went after work I simply just took off the top scrub and kept basketball shorts in my car. Don't see how hard it is to change after work/school into something simple like that. I too think it is very unsanitary to where scrubs after you went to work, but hey, who are you/I/we to tell a person what he/she can and cannot wear? Thank God I have yet to come across someone wearing scrubs right after work and the 24 Hour I go to is next to a hospital lol.

I can understand the OP point about how sanitary it is to wear scrubs to the gym when working out and personally I wouldn't wear scrubs to the gym to work out. With that being said, I wouldn't have gone up to someone and questioned them about their workout attire. I see plenty of people in the gym use a piece of equipment, get it covered in sweat, and then think nothing of moving onto the next machine without cleaning it. I find that disgusting and much more offensive than someone wearing scrubs to the gym (in my opinion). I make a habit of using the cleaner wipes to clean off a piece of equipment before I use it and then after I'm done.

Same here. I don't think it would hurt if snatched a few tissues of cavi/bleach wipes and bring it to the gym xD

To be honest, you should assume everyone has dirty clothes on. You never know when someone washed their clothes last and maybe they have giant abscesses on their groin and armpits. Scrubs do not seem like they would be a good thing to wear in general since they don't necessarily wick moisture away.

For what it's worth, here in NYC there are multiple scrubs brands that are marketed to use in daily life outside of a setting where they'd be expected. There is a rising popularity of commuter scrubs for wearing on the subways... since they are disgusting. These scrub brands use techy fabrics, make joggers and other performance type scrubs and the gym is another spot that I've seen people wearing these since, presumably for the same reason.

No scrubs in the gym! Period. That's just tacky. I'd recommend some shorts and a ratty T.

Lol, tacky? It's a gym not a fashion show. Who cares what you're wearing, you're there to work out not walk down a catwalk.

It doesn't matter if they're wearing scrubs or not, you need to assume EVERYONE at the gym is leaving sweat, urine, feces, and blood on the equipment... And usually, they are, even you.

You do realize you quoted a 2012 comment ?. I don't think "Karen's" existed in that year.

Anyways, I definitely would not want to scratch or stretch my $100 Figs at the gym. I've actually gone to the gym with my buddies right after work once in Cherokee scrubs. Worst. Idea. Ever.

Seems like a bad idea, expensive scrubs at the gym. Not to mention, not ideal gym clothes.
