"We don't hire RN's who got RN-BSN online"

Nursing Students Online Learning

Updated:   Published

I am a new grad, I went through my local CC for my RN and will be starting the online RN-BSN bridge through my state university system this fall. I already have a BA so I will only be doing the 8 non-clinical nursing courses. I did find a job, in acute care even, and my NM told me the program I chose is wonderful an she highly recommends it.

However - a neighbor of someone I know runs a home health company somewhere, and is saying that they do not hire anybody who got an online RN-BSN, regardless of ADN or experience working as an RN, and "we're not the only facility with this policy." Huh? I'd never heard of this, I had only ever read that online RN-BSN (since most don't have clinical or they have a community health clinical you set up yourself) is not a problem. It sure isn't a problem for the hospital that just hired me or the other hospital system I interviewed with. Is it unusual for a facility to have a no online RN-BSN policy? Is it specific to home health? I don't want to work in home health anyway, I chose the online RN-BSN so I could fit it around my work schedule rather than vice versa, and because I'd never heard before that it was sub-par. Ideas?

Have worked in home health for a couple of decades and have never heard of this in all the agencies I have worked for. This obviously is some kind of personal bias that this person is unwisely being vocal about. Sounds like she is not a pleasant person to work for.

I have never heard of this before. I would think so as long as the program where you are earning your RN to BSN is CCNE accredited, facilities would be more than willing to hire you. The number of adults returning to school continues to increase, which is why so many online degree programs are being offered. Maybe there is a particular school the home health manager had in mind when making the statement.

It's one of these discussions where you get the "well a friend of my coworker transferred into a 4-year program after her ADN, maybe you should do that," and "my neighbor's HH company won't hire anybody with an online RN-BSN I guess you shouldn't do it", "maybe none of the hospitals here in NY accept online RN-BSN," "This HH company's HR debt has a list of every school with an online RN-BSN so they know who has a online BSN and they can throw out your resume,"from somebody who is not a nurse and thinks they know everything. It kind of makes my head explode - I did plenty of research and finally found that the online RN-BSN from my state university was going to to be the fasted and most convenient for me.

Online for me beginning Sept! I wouldn't worry a bit so long as your program is accredited by CCNE. That's hogwash!

I have never heard that. I would think if your school is accredited, you shouldn't have a problem. I went to an on-line RN-BSN program that had a brick and mortar location and no one has ever even asked me if the program was on-line.

Even the Ivy Leagues like Penn & Harvard have online classes now, people are slowly changing their attitudes about online learning.

Which online RN-BSN program are you going through??

THANKS
