We got into the CLC Nursing program...now what

Published

OK, we got in, but now what? I am a detail orientated person and I want info! :lol2: When can I start picking up things I need? What are those items?

I have really lost it! I went from thinking about getting in to wondering what to do/what to read/what to buy before class starts.

And how big of a backpack do we REALLY need? :uhoh3:

Anybody out there from CLC have any advice? Help me before my family moves out of the house permanently (wait...maybe that would be a good thing:devil:)!

Specializes in Cardiac ICU.

Sure would like to sit on the beach with them, too!

I'll meet you there!!! :monkeydance:

Me too!! I haven't had a mai tai in FOREVER!!

I too am so ready for the semester to be over. I keep reminding myself that by 2 weeks from this past Thursday I will be DONE!!

I was lamenting to my sister the other day about how time seems to be draaagggiiinnnggg by these days. She reminded me that when I first decided I wanted to go back to school a year and a half ago I was complaining that it was going to take soooo long before I could even get into the program (had to take BIO and Chem first before I could even screen). Now, here I am just weeks away from beginning. So when I think of it that way - I guess I can be a patient for a few more weeks! Plus, it's cool because with the holidays in the middle there I'm sure time will just fly by (once this semester is finally over that is!).

I just had to share this. I've been pretty stressed. I want to be done right now. I'm trying to study for my A&P lab final and I'm not very motivated.

I have been trying for months to get my 9 year old to allow me do do something and...he finally let me!!:monkeydance: I just got done writing all the muscles on his body with a marker. Ummm...just cuz it says washable doesn't really mean much! :uhoh3: He's not too happy with me,:angryfire so I paid his $20. I took pics of him, not that you can read it, but he saw the little smiley face I drew right above his "plumber's crack". Did I mention he's not happy? Anyway, I just had to share.

That is too funny!!!!!

I think I found the perfect planner (for me anyway) and I thought of all of you. It is by At-A-Glance and it's called Triple View. I got it at Staples for $22-ish. It is a weekly view planner, but you can see a "to do" and "agenda" list for the entire month. It's not too huge, but I won't have to write tiny either. I hope this link works. If not let me know.

Also, on another thread they have been posting lists and lists of things they felt useful for nursing school. I have been pasting them on Word. Is anyone interested? The thread on allnurses is like 60 pages long. Let me know and I can try to post it on here.

Also, any feelings on starting a yahoos group once we get started. It could have study group times, help with school questions, etc. We could have it for just our Section or include any section. Not sure on that part, but what do you guys think?

Diedra

Diedra - what an awesome idea you had with your son! How fun!!

Cool planner too. I would love to have the Word doc you mentioned. If you are unable to post it here let me know - I'd love it if you could email it to me.

Also, I think starting a Yahoo group sounds like an awesome idea. I don't know how much the sections overlap in terms of assignments, etc. Maybe clcstudent can fill us in on that? If they are too different it might be best to set one up just for our section. Then people in other sections could set up their own.

We are facing computer challenges tonight. My daughter is away at college and her hard drive crashed on her laptop. Right in the middle of finals! Yikes!!! So now my husband is going to take my laptop down to her tomorrow so she can use it until next week when I drive down to pick her up for winter break. What a pain in the you-know-what. So now while I'm trying to wrap up my own projects/papers/studying I have to work around my hubby's schedule to use his laptop (my only other alternative is to use our ANCIENT desktop which is sooooo slow!). Oh well, if that's the worst problem I ever have to worry about while my daughter is away I'll be a happy happy lady!

all sections use the same modules. when you do the "assignments" it'll be in your lecture class where sections 1 & 2 are together, 3 & 4 together, etc...

your study groups will probably just meet at clc or a common place where everyone can get together.

I got myself a planner, but I made sure it didn't specify times since I will be going at night - most planners are daytime only.

DEFINITELY!!!! I would love it if you could share that Word document with us!!! I looked at it, but hard to keep up with it!

And if you started a Yahoo group, I would be up for that...although I am a night class student. I have classes on Monday/Wednesday/Thursday nights...the rest of the time, I'd make open for study groups! I do work through the day...not sure if I could access it or not...maybe you could have a couple a week. We can definitely do that!

ok...hopefully this posts well. if not, i can get it to whoever wants it by email. basically, i took to long thread and copied and paste. i left off repeats and most stuff like having a good family. some of the stuff may not be needed for us, but i found some ideas i liked.

anyhoo...here ya go!!

diedra

-small colored cards on a ring, they are about 2x3 inches, they are the perfect size to put in my scrub pants (carpenter) and i can study stuff when i have a few minutes down time

-a good decent lunchbox, eating at the hospital can get expensive and fattening.

-a few red pens are also helpful.

-lots of highlighters

-a good organizer that works for you

-a good little notebook (one that fits in your pocket). i started using it in clinical to write down meds, procedures, acronyms, lab values, and any other important information, and i carried it with me all the time. it's not full yet but i have another 2 yrs. to go. it also helps because you don't have to re-write a lot. if you use a med in obs and come across it in rehab you only have

-3 ring-binder

-loose leaf notebook paper

-one of those 3 hole punches that you can put in the 3 ring binder

-3 folders specifically for clinicals- one to keep your assessment sheets, extra blank careplans, any notes that help you in clinicals, extra paper to write on. one that holds your completed careplan, med cards, and textbook pictures to hand into your instructor, and one to put all the graded med cards and textbook pictures in.

-index cards-3x5 and 5x8 and index card boxes for each size

-no. 2 pencils and sharpener

-stapler, small

-calculator

-coil pocket guide made for rn's or lpn's. it is by ehren myeres either under lpn notes (nurse's clinical pocket guide) or under rn notes.

-a watch that u can pin to your uniform, otherwise your constantly taking it off to wash your hands

-the envelopes that they carry at target with the velcro closures. these envelopes are perfect for storing your looseleaf paper in as well as notes for class. i found looseleaf paper and the envelopes method to be exactly what i needed to stay organized! i keep the looseleaf together with those little black clippies

-tape! i hate it when i reached out to my pocket and i can't find a piece of tape. there will be something that needs to be taped, either the foley bag, or the iv lines, anything

-scrubs that have lots of pockets, it will make your clinical easy as you can store lots of stuff so that you don't have to run in and out the room!

-hesi nclex rn review, it's the best nursing book that you can find because it highlights the major things -taber medical dictionary was a great help for me when i was taking pathophysiology.

-davis drug guide was also a big help for me in pharmacology.

- digital voice recorder

-a little tiny bottle of hand sanitizer... the hospitals have them in every room, but it's nice to have a bottle on you in case you are in a pinchso

-alcohol swabs, so that if you have to use a stethoscopeor any other equipment after someone else, you can clean them first.

-expanding folder to seperate all of my tests by class.

-dividers for your binder

-a regular dictionary

-drug reference guide, the one that's about 6''x10". you will use it constantly and students were always taking mine.

-small pocket assessment guide so you can refresh yourself if you think you are forgetting something, and in case the clinical day doesn't go the way you had hoped...which is usually what happens. you have information at hand. get one with blank pages in it somewhere that you can write on. doesn't hurt to have a few spanish translations, either.

-a good pocket protector. mine has velcro which attach to scissors and a hemostat, had a place for coins, and for the 1000 alcohol pads you will use when you clean your stethoscope, scissors, etc, between patients.

-a container for my trunk to hold all of them

-support hose, knee hi's

-scissors... 3 1/2 inc and 5 1/2 inch scissors get your name engraved on them to prevent stealing

-a tide/clorox bleach pen to remove said ink stains from uniform and a spray can of the stinkiest hair spray you can find as this will get ink out of you uniform....spray hair spray on ink stain and wash it .... works well...

-sticky notes and sticky flags from the post-it company.... awesome way to flag important info....

-nursing made incredibly easy.... patient teaching book" you will need supplental info to fluff your assignments and you will use them in your career. each semester get another one like "nursing made incredibly easy.... pathopysiology..." these will be great for you to really understand a lot

-network.... ask others you know who have become rn's lpn's if they have any books they want to part with....i have ton's of stuff and am waiting for the sweet soul who wants it....

-get a subscription to nursing2005 or rn magazine.... this will save you butt when you need to find a current nursing trend. ask other nursing friends if they have issues old ones and get them they are handy to have....you will need them for reports and papers

-find a partner in class...team up with someone who desires nursing as much as you do and work together.

-a few pretty and modest sets of undies that you won't be embarrassed to wear in front of your lab parter

-i absolutely cannot live without my computer! it not only aids me in the fact that i can do a quick search for anything that i may be having problems understanding but it is also there to just help me relax by playing a quick game to break up the monotony of all that studying

-a sphygmomanometer ( blood pressure cuff)

-a good sturdy bookcase - to keep all of those gigantic books close at hand

-nail file and nail clippers - so u don't get sent home from clinicals

-red bull

-nclex-pn exam cram isbn 0-7897-3267-x

-pen light, hemostat, scissors, tape

-some type of relaxation method

-always ask for student discount. i even got the local pharmacy to knock 5 bucks off my bp cuff

-get scrubs that are a bit loose and have painter pockets, side pockets, etc. buy a top that allows u to move around-also with pockets (but stuff will fall out for sure)

-buy a double tube stethoscope-u will be able to hear better with all background noise in clinical

-stethoscope: if you can afford it master cardiology is always the best bet

-the floppies i carried with me when i needed to copy something to disk from school or just work on a project at school

-the disk med surg made incred. easy this disk has made study time so much easier for me when it comes to exams

-the doenges care plan book (6th ed.)

-tabers encyclopedia (great for care plans!)

-within each notebook, i suggest you add a calendar

(full page type) to keep an at a glance view of what

assignments are due

-good stethoscope

-pda

-good comfortable shoes: merrells, nurse mates, roper,

-scrubs with pockets like painters pants

-purchase a good rolling book bag to save your back

-saunders nclex review book eventually

-black clicky pens so you don't have to worry about the lids

-a black sharpie to cross out patient info on any papers

-a nice clipboard that opens with a calculator at walmart
