1/2 way through level one... 1/3 of the students are gone...

Published

That pretty much sums it up.

Today in NU 116, Level one, I noticed that many of the seats that were once occupied are now empty. Just to check, I thought I'd count the occupied seats. Sure enough, of the +/- 65 students that I started level one with, there were only 43 left after eight weeks. Talk about depressing!

I'm a "B" and hope to be there at the end of the next 8 weeks. How does this compare with your school?

Any tips?

We're halfway through the second semester (of four) and although we've started with 24, we've lost 6.

I understand that administration expects a minimum of 20% of the class to fail each semester....unfortunately, it's running pretty accurate.

We lost one out of 64 students our first semester, that wasn't due to the nursing class but a co-req. Second semester, 6 of us had to take over (I'm one of them due to death in the family, my family with flu and strep - I wasn't able to hand in all of my homework assignments and even though I ended up with a solid B in the class they still made me take the class over urgghh! things happen!)

the same is true for almost any degree program. Way more freshmen than seniors. Life just gets in the way of plans.

we started with 30, and we have less than 1/2 of our original class. We are in 4th semester, but have picked up people in every semester. A lot of people drop out due to finances, relationships, and poor grades. Some come back the following semester and some dont. Although most do because they can get right back in usually if they drop early enough, and there is a long wait to get in if they have to go back on a list.

Thanks for all of your support!!! I had no idea that so many students would be gone so quickly. I think it is such a shame that people don't find out what is involved in going to nursing school before they apply. I'm sure there are many competant pre-nursing students who never go on to become nursing students because their grades aren't as high as the quitters. It's frustrating to see.

Personally, I think a pre-requisite to going to nursing school should be one year as an active participant of allnurses. It was this forum that taught me what is involved in nursing school as well as giving me some insight into nursing as a career. It seems so many that start nursing school just don't have a clue as to what is involved.

Before I applied to nursing school, I knew (thanks to this forum) that graduating from nursing school would be one of the hardest things I've ever done in my life. As I look around the classroom I keep telling myself that I know I will succeed.

Still, it's a real shocker to see so many gone so quickly.

Best of luck to all of my fellow nursing students!!!!

I honestly had no idea what I was getting into, or that I had to know so much. I wish I had known of this board then. But with A LOT of determination, crying, and changing my life around, i see the light at the end of the tunnel. And I will have a much better life for it. So no regrets!
