Was RN school easy for you?

Updated:   Published

PLEASE DON'T ANSWER IF IT WAS HARD FOR YOU.

I keep hearing about how hard nursing school is. Well, I know that, or everyone would go and pass! I need to hear some positive stories! Have you heard of Hypnobirthing? One suggestion is to block out the negative stories that people always offer up so that that doesn't become YOUR reality. Please share with me what you enjoyed about nursing school and HOW you made it easy for YOU!

Thanks in advance!

We covered pharmacology and didn’t even know how molecules interact

Were organic and inorganic chemistry not requirements in your program?

General chem doesn’t teach you anything about nursing school. It’s literally just math. And I don’t know any nursing BSN program that requires Ochem. And as someone who has taken Ochem as well (just 1 semester) I still don’t see how that class is helpful for any nurse. A&P triumphs all

Well, I was specifically replying to the comment that pharmacology in nursing school did not teach us how the molecules interacted with each other ... I was simply stating that we learned that in chemistry, and pharmacology builds on those principles. I didn't say that you use chemistry in your day to day nursing practice.

She’s talking about CRNA. And gen chem isn’t “just math”. It explains reaction rates, acid base neutrality, thermal energy, much that pertains to nursing. And organic and biochem are very useful too.

Sure you can just do things because you’re told to, but I like knowing why I’m doing things a certain way.

All of the BSN programs I looked at required Ochem, but I'm in CA. I think the comment was in regards to not being taught how molecules work. I was taught that in chem and micro bio ??‍♀️ Every program is very different I've found since I started precepting students. I'm often sadly surprised at the lack of knowledge some possess.

Oh in BSN? Does any BSN require organic chemistry? If so that’s news to me.

Mine and every one I’ve known of takes credit in HS chem, which is extremely simplistic usually.

Many nurses I work with have never taken GENERAL BIO! Let that sink in.

I took 2 semesters each of general chem and organic chem, as well as micro and biochem for my first bachelor's. Sometimes I forget what was required for nursing school and what wasn't, since it all transferred (plus, this was all over a decade ago). But I vaguely remember some kind of chemistry requirement, and a lot of references to it were made during pharmacology. As long as I can explain in layman's terms how a beta blocker or bronchodilator work to a patient, that's basically all I need.

Yeah a lot of nurses can’t. Especially when I float to med surg floors sometimes I’m amazed.

Couple weeks back I got pulled for a med surg floor and the other nurse told me her patient was SOB, and had me call the RT to do a breathing treatment.

After the fact realized the dummy had not auscultated the breath sounds, and had fluids going at 125 an hour. The patient didn’t need a breathing treatment- they needed the fluids stopped and some lasix STAT.

Another time I chewed my grandmas nurse out for letting her sit on 5LNC at 83% spo2. She had an “oh well attitude”. I said “DID YOU THINK TO PUT HER ON VAPOTHERM?!” “Oooh. Was dat?” ??‍♂️ FIRED! Had her moved to my floor so we could actually get her better.

I see it so often! I think more education would help!

Well let it be new because my high school chem was not counted towards my nursing degree lol The CSU and UC required at least a semester of organic and a semester or inorganic. I also was required a full pharm class as an admission requirement to my school which was then the foundation throughout the program. That's why I picked a program carefully and we all took micro bio as it was part of our required courses for admission.

Literally no regular nurse needs to know anything about reaction rates, kinetics, etc. Organic and biochem are great classes but if your that far in your studies, might as well apply to med school lol.

Sadly some people are just not meant for acute care nursing. Let's be honest the NCLEX wasn't difficult and very basic meaning if you skimmed past in nursing school you could pass it. I felt the same with both my AANP and ANCC, but again I chose rigorous programs because I wanted to be as prepared as possible. There is no consensus and that is part of the issue. 2.0 to get in here and 3.5 to get in there. It's scary!

Oh ok I see what you meant my bad.
