I agree no standardization weakens our profession. We also need our own governing boards and ethical principles as both MDs and PAs do, we discussed this very topic in my health care policy course. We have NPs working outside of their scope and it weakens the bargaining power if those who hold those specializations. Hell I had to pay over 2K to practice in CA yet they don't require National Certification! ? It's a money making scheme and why so many new grad NPs are getting *** contracts and can't prove their worth.

Again not sure what type of program your friends went through, but mine was quite different. Stats was different than undergrad stats ??‍♀️ However, I also went to clinical with NPs whose school didn't require proctored exams and didn't know the significance of nitrites in a UA when prescribing antimicrobial therapy; so I'm never suprised. I agree you get out of it what you put into it and I expected a little more than I recieved. Every preceptor I had was an MD and all said I needed to go to med school instead, so maybe that's why my expectations were higher because my knowledge base is different. I always say if you want to be an MD or get an MD education go medical school, as an NP your education builds on your nursing foundation and it is a different model entirely.

You don't understand why stats is part of grad school? Graduate level stats is required even for the PhD level applications I am currently completing. Research based stats is definitely not the same as under grad stats. I only wrote 3 papers my entire NP program and they were in Theory, Health Policy, and part of my Capstone. This again is why you choose a school carefully. Also, how far along are they in NP school? First year? Then that makes sense. I felt physics was useless when it came to analyzing statistics and I was a biomed major before becoming an RN.

Sadly some people are just not meant for acute care nursing. Let's be honest the NCLEX wasn't difficult and very basic meaning if you skimmed past in nursing school you could pass it. I felt the same with both my AANP and ANCC, but again I chose rigorous programs because I wanted to be as prepared as possible. There is no consensus and that is part of the issue. 2.0 to get in here and 3.5 to get in there. It's scary!

Well let it be new because my high school chem was not counted towards my nursing degree lol The CSU and UC required at least a semester of organic and a semester or inorganic. I also was required a full pharm class as an admission requirement to my school which was then the foundation throughout the program. That's why I picked a program carefully and we all took micro bio as it was part of our required courses for admission.

All of the BSN programs I looked at required Ochem, but I'm in CA. I think the comment was in regards to not being taught how molecules work. I was taught that in chem and micro bio ??‍♀️ Every program is very different I've found since I started precepting students. I'm often sadly surprised at the lack of knowledge some possess.

Yikes didn't even know how molecules interacted? Sadly nursing schools vary widely. And you would be surprised at how many can't write an APA paper even with a manual ??‍♀️ And those sound like low level of research articles and less of a problem with nursing research. I don't touch those "studies" no matter who writes them...

Yup, I call my BSN my *** in nursing degree because I breezed through it due to already having a solid foundation in research, theory, methodology and proper APA formatting. I seriously feel my ADN program laid the framework for my current studies and made graduate school tolerable.

Couldn't agree more! Since graduating I have precepted countless students and oriented many new grads. The type of instructor or professor a student had was more important than ADN versus BSN in regards to preparedness.

I did not find it hard and didn't need to spend countless hours studying, but I think that was due to knowing my learning style and adjusting. I also jumped right into everything and asked questions as well as in was a fly on the wall during grand rounds because I wanted a greater dept of knowledge. I agree with blocking out the negative stories. I was more just over it to be honest and wanted my free time back. I graduated with my ADN 2014, BSN 2016, and MSN APRN 2019. I feel the same way about all 3 degrees. I maintained grades, worked full time, and raised a child through all 3.

Hello! If you are worried about your GPA just write a stellar essay and have phenomenal letters of recommendation. Those outweigh the GPA. I had one from the medical director of my unit, my unit director who has her MSN, and another program director I worked with who happened to be an NP and UofC grad. There is no set requirement on where the recommendations come from. Your preceptors can be an NP or MD, just not an PA. And you can use the same preceptor twice if it's in your exact specialty. Meaning you can do 2 semesters in an actual family practice office or I can do 2 semesters in an Internal Medicine practice since my focus is primary care. Best of luck!

I'm currently set to start my 3rd semester in their AGNP program. So, the first year all of the specialties are in courses together while you take the 3Ps. This program is online, but it is rigorous. Be prepared, but it is doable. Biostatistics was actually easy, the Adv Patho Phys almost killed us all, it was just a lot of info and very in depth. Every professor has a different set up, so in one class you may have 5 exams while in the other you just have 2, but the midterm and finals are always proctors and no exams are ever allowed to be open note. Hello everyone! I'm currently in the University of Cincinatti's AGPCNP program and will be starting my clinical hours this fall. I am looking for an NP (can be an FNP as long as I stick to patients 13 and above) to precept me this fall, spring 2019, or summer 2019. I've had to expand my search area because the region I currently reside is low on NPs and the ones we do have are already locked into precepting clear into next fall. Since my specialty is Primary Care/Internal Medicine I need the bulk of my hours in those types of settings. Any help would be greatly appreciated!
