Suebird :)

;) Don't give up capricorn girl. I was in my early 40's when I graduated nursing school. I think my AGE gave me some advantages when it came to getting my first job...life experience! Many of us have entered nursing as a second career...some, like me, weren't able to go into nursing right out of high school because of various reasons. You'll find your niche....just keep looking and keep the faith.

Good luck to you!

Specializes in ED, ICU, PSYCH, PP, CEN.

I graduated at age 47 and had lots of job offers, keep looking and consider starting on med surge to get experience and be able to put together some good references

Specializes in Telemetry & Obs.

Graduated the same month I turned 51...didn't stop me at all from getting my dream job!!

Age is a liability only if you *think* it is....I don't, therefore it's not :)

The poster's problem is that she was probably applying for clinical experience in the Philippines. Unlike in the USA, they tolerate age discrimination there. It's just a stupid policy of most hospitals there.

The only way around it is work overseas especially the US where they consider age an asset. If you need clinical experience, some new nurses pay some hospitals to get a few months experience.

Specializes in LTC, MDS Cordnator, Mental Health.

I decided to change careers late in life as well. When I was 45 I started as a NA-R Working nights when back to School and graduated as an LPN the facility had me working as a TMA and asked me to apply as an LPN as soon as I graduated. I have only 16 credits left and they have asked me to apply as an RN as soon as I graduate... I have had many inquires from other facilities in the area as well. Net working is the key.

Hi! Don't give up.do what you have to do.In the Philippines it is whom you know.Look for people who are well connected so you can get in.The sad part, is when those people from the Philippines come over here and become charge nurses, supervisor, or manager... they will expect the people below them to kiss their ass,and expect to be envited in every party you are having or they will take it as insult.I work in the Hospital where its 60% Filipinos.(more or less).:angryfire Personally. I do not like working with a bunch of pinoys. They are nice in front of you then talk behind your back, write you up for whatever they can think and because they kiss the ass of the almighty "BOSS" the stupid boss will beleive and side with them. Philippine style of work ethics is a good training ground for the future asshole at the Hospital , LTC facilities,or in any work place. You see, I have no Philippine work experince because right after I finished college there.,I move here in the US.So Goodluck...

Hi there! I'm a Filipina but I'm like you, I don't like dealing or working with pinoys because they keep the bad habits anywhere they go! I hope when I'm a nurse in the US I won't have to deal with much pinoys anymore. Sad to say but it's true and I'm not proud of it. So to the pinays out there, please leave your Pinoy bad ways in the Philippines, thanks.

^^ Your posts about not so good experiences working with fellow pinoys are sad indeed. but i believe that there are others also that see it as an advantage or have good experience working with their kababayans. I hope they post also so that we can have a more well-rounded view on this.

to say that pinoys are bad fellow workers is nothing but faulty generalization. are we saying here that other people don't have their share of bad apples in their midst? let's not kid ourselves. it'll be more sensible to throw such immature thinking out the door, keep an open mind and if it's just too much to resist, confine fault-finding to our own self...

You might try applying to the small hospitals in or near your area. The big hospitals may be difficult to enter because of the age requirement. The problem is that many employers in the US require you to have some work experience in a big hospital, frequently specifying the number of beds the hospital should have. However, there are other employers that are not so exacting in their requirements.

If your aim to to work in the US eventually, gain any work experience that you can obtain, even volunteer work is acceptable to some US employers.

Don't give up. Good luck!
