Wal-Mart Walk-in Clinic

Nurses General Nursing

Today I was out with my mom at Walmart and she decided to get her flu shot at the walk-in clinic there. I was appauled and confused at what was going on there. There were only 2 people working...the doc and a girl who I'm not sure was a nurse or a receptionist or both. She was extremely monotone and rude and when my mom went to get her shot, she drew up the injection but then the doc went in and actually gave the shot. I've never heard of this....since when do docs give shots? The only thing I can think of is the girl actually wasn't a nurse...but that would be weird to have just a doc and a receptionist working in the clinic, wouldn't it? I don't have much experience with walk in clinics. But anyhow, both the girl and the doc were very impersonal and rude..the doc didn't even say hello or talk to my mom...just walked in, gave the shot and walked out. Weird.

Anyone else had a similar experience?

Around here the pharm techs draw it up & the pharmacist gives it. Pretty hard to mess up a flu shot. I think they are adequately prepared to do it.

Turf wars aside.:roflmao:

The rudeness was unfortunate. but there seems to be a lot of that these days.

Why would you even want to have someone else draw it up for you? What, to save the whole 30-60 seconds? If I'm going to give a shot, *I* want to be the one to draw it up.

Was it actually a walk-in or a set for flu shots? In my province, pharmacists give injections at their enclosed booths.

What's of more concern to me is: was a health history taken for allergies? Did your Mum pay or was your provincial plan billed?

My GP will routinely give injections because it's simply faster that way, he draws it up and injects.

Rexall's in my province have full service medi-centres in them but the pharmacists can still give injections and do so.

Different mind set. Way different in how pharmacists work vs nursing.

It was an actual walk in clinic within the wal mart. No name tags saying who was what, no introductions...no allergy or medical history taken..just a form with personal info. If the girl was a nurse, I was just baffled as to why she would draw the injection but not give it. Terrible experience!

Geez. In none of the MD offices i go to does anyone wear a name tag any longer. Oh well, I just roll with the changes no matter how annoying and unprofessional they may be.

True. But I still don't get it. Is it a power thing? As in "I'm a pharmacist, and I'm much too busy to draw up a vaccine" I would just feel uncomfortable giving meds someone else drew up. It doesn't save the pharmacist time. And if you're gonna let the receptionist, MA, whatever draw up the shot, you might as well just let her give it. So illogical.... This is why I could never be a "doctors office" nurse.

Medical assistants draw up meds for MDs all the time. The time saved drawing up botox alone saves millions of healthcare dollars.

Where can I find one of these "Medical Assistants?" -just kidding:)

I have never heard of medical assistants here in Ontario...I don't believe we have them. I know there is a new program for physicians assistants that is pretty new here...but it is a post graduate university degree. Either she was a nurse or a receptionist..no clue which.

There's a whole other thread, if not an entire doctoral dissertation, in that statement ... ;) :cautious:

Lolll so true.

Lolll so true.

Okay, yes that was a judgmental statement. I apologize...no, your clothing or appearance certainly doesn't discern what your job title is....I was just referring to what I generally see most of the time.
