how many of you would rather waive your PTO, Temporary Disability Pay, and health and welfare benefits (medical, dental, vision, and life) for an approximate $5 (maybe $6) increase in your base pay? i have the option of doing so. i am single, have 20/15 vision, don't really need dental nor vision benefits, and don't really care for life insurance. i also don't plan on staying at this hospital for more than 2, maybe 3 years tops. would you waive these benefits if you were me? thank you for your time, feedback, and response.
I waived health, dental, eye insurance along with PTO (vacation/sick time) only because I have a policy with the insurance company I work full time for.
I am taking the GPN position just as some extra $ in my pocket while I continue my education and persue my RN.
However, if the GPN position were my only source of income, I would absolutely NOT waive health insurance or PTO!
No one ever thinks they will get sick when they are young and healthy but things happen to even the seemingly young and healthy. Having just in-patient hospitalization coverage really isn't a good idea. There are so many illnesses/injuries that don't require hospitalization but can run you thousands of dollars in outpatient treatment!
Just a example, my husband had to have a cyst removed from his scalp. Between the dermatologist visit, the actual removal of the cyst by the plastic surgeon (no dermatologist would do it), the facility fees where he had the cyst removed, follow up appointments, bioposy, and meds the charges came to OVER 5 thousand dollars! We had insurance to cover it all, thankfully.
I work for an insurance company and can tell you first hand, the charges for medical services is CRAZY! and with no insurance to cover any of it, you can easily run into financial turmoil!
Take the insurance, if for nothing else but piece of mind. Just like car insurance, most of us never, ever use it but its a necessity for the just in cases.
How much income would you LOSE if you call in sick even 3 or 4 days per year? How much income WILL you LOSE when you take a vacation? Don't forget to calculate those amounts into your decision. It's not just the health insurance (which is almost always worth buying the best you can get). Even healthy people take a few sick days most years -- and almost everyone wants some vacation time.
Without the PTO, your income would take a big hit those payperiods, and that would greatly diminish any cash benefit you would get from the increase in base pay. I've seen a lot of young people make that decision and regret it when they realize that they can't afford a vacation ... or can't afford to take off when they get sick.

Don't take this deal. Hopefully you will remain in good health but if you suffer an unexpected illness or injury you would be in a heck of a pickle.
PTO is like a free savings account for emergencies if you can't work. I have almost 500 hours on my book. That is almost 4 months of FT salary from work if I ever became sick or hurt.
I would sit and do the math. I currently pay for my own insurance seperate from my employer for about 50 dollars a month. Its nice coverage with no dental or vision though. I have had some dental work done over the years and it has never been more than 200 a year for the work I needed done (way cheaper then had I bough a monthly dental plan). I wouldnt go without insurance ever but if you can find a nice affordable plan that isnt more or equal to the increase in your pay monthly I would do it. In your case 5 extra dollars an hour equals 800 more in a month if you work 40 hour weeks. So if you buy your own insurance plan at 50 dollars a month you are making an extra 750 a month, man ID DO IT!!!

A friend of mine did this and ended up in trouble when she got sick for an extended period of time and had no PTO to cover her and pay her bills.
