Waiting on Ivy Tech acceptance letters thread

U.S.A. Indiana

I thought it might be nice to have a place for us to vent our frustrations with waiting until May 30th or so when letters start going out. I know I'm going nuts already!

How about introductions and a little info about each person?

I'm applying to both Bloomington and Indy-Lawrence for the Fall 2009 ASN programs. I turned in my apps this week with 4 As on the pre-reqs and a 90.0 on the TEAS. My eventual goal is at least getting a BSN, and if I feel like doing homework long enough, an MSN of some sort. I work full time now, but will hopefully only work part time if I get accepted. I'm so antsy to start preparing and finally feel like all of this is real!

For those of you that work:

What are you going to do about your jobs once you start your programs?

I will be continuing to work FT. I know they don't recommend it but until they pay my mortgage I have no choice! I work overnights and weekends, so scheduling won't be an issue...just hope I can handle being permanently sleep deprived. I am hoping to have class 4 days/week instead of 5, and really hoping that my off day (should one exist) will be on Thursday or Friday, since I work overnights Wed/Thurs/Fri/Sat. But beggars can't be choosers I know, and I will find a way to make it all work no matter what! Come too far to give up now.

Congratulations to all of you who got your letters Friday!! I'm so happy for you all!!

:yeah::yeah::yeah:

About immunizations (like Hep B, MMR, etc) and also the TB skin test, don't forget to check into your local health department!! They are a tremendous resource for vaccinations and the like and are typically no to very low cost. Most of them have a website, and you could google your local county department. Marion County Health Department, in Indy, offers free or $10 immunizations, tetorifice shots, TB tests, etc. I am not sure about physicals or titers. I have always heard titers are pricey and haven't yet looked in to whether insurance pays for them or not. At this point I will probably just get vaccinated again. Another thought for those of you who are covered by health insurance, give your provider a call. Many insurance companies cover all preventative care. Some even cover vaccines for adults, as they aren't costly to the insurance co and they are always looking to save a buck down the line! As far as the physicals, I am sure PCPs and NPs that work in most doctor's offices are used to filling out various physical forms. I wouldn't think there would be much trouble to get them to sign off on one, especially because the forms are not nearly as involved as other common paper work they get, like disability, workman's comp, maternity leave, FMLA, etc. I'm sure most practices have a procedure in place for getting these things done and get asked about it dozens of times a day. If you don't have a PCP, when you select a practice, ask if they have PAs or NPs on staff. At my doctor's office, the wait time to see an MD is weeks long sometimes but the NPs can often get you in the same or next day. Just throwing some ideas out there!

Mhnice- It might not be too bad since you work over the latter part of the week. (it could be worse) You can catch up on sleep the other days maybe, and on weekend days. I don't drink coffee but something tells me I'm going to start in August.

Immunizations/physical etc: I need a new doctor anyway, so I guess now is the perfect time!! I'll make the appt on monday, and if it takes a few weeks, then perfect b/c that's when I'll know what I need done! I've only seen my OBGYN for the past few years b/c I've been having babies.

I know, the whole time I was pregnant I dealt only with my OB. I only go see my PCP when I am sick, which thankfully is rare. I just emailed my insurance company to ask about coverage for immunizations, titers, tetorifice shots, etc. If I have coverage I will get them through my doctor's office...If not I'll be hanging out at the health department!

I'm not a huge coffee fan either, but I drink it on occasion. If you like it sweeter, the best thing I've ever found is liquid cinnamon creamer. It makes it taste like you're drinking a cinnamon roll!

Well the awesome part is that once you graduate, you won't know what to do with yourself! You will have so much more free time after this crazy busy 2 years!

What are you going to do about your jobs once you start your programs?

I'm planning on going part time. I know that there's no way I could survive nursing school while working full time. Although at my work, full time (enough to get full benefits) is only 30 hours a week, but I really don't think I could manage that :( I'm hoping to work 10-20 hours a week. I've worked full time and supported my husband while he's been in school the last 4 years (he worked part time) so now it's his turn :)

Luckily my work hours can be pretty flexible. I'm thinking that if classes start at 9am pretty much every day, I'll go in from 6-8am every morning and that's 10 hours right there. I already go in by 6:30am every day, so half an hour earlier won't be too much different.

Melissa, isn't Indy's program 4 days a week? Unless they have changed it in the past term, you should def. have either Monday or Friday off. I think it was M-T-W-Th or T-W-TH-F that they said were the two options. That was last fall when I went to the info session though so who knows, maybe they did change things.

Oh wow, if I could do the T W TH F option I'd only have to put my son in daycare 3 days a week - that would be awesome!! Hope it's still like that.

What are the uniforms like?

It looks like Bloomington's is all 5 days :( Although, Pharmocology is the only Friday class, and that's only in the morning, so it's not too bad
