Volunteer opportunities for an RN in Los Angeles, California

Hello everyone, I'm a new grad RN in California and I'm interested in volunteering somewhere I can really put my skills to use. I'm currently sort of holding out of permanent jobs because I'd like to get accepted into a new grad program and would not want to abruptly leave a job given for the program. If anyone on here is running or knows of any opportunities in LA, CA I'd greatly appreciate the information.

I haven't had much luck finding them on my own and when I've asked previous hospital/clinical administrators I've only been told about activities and errands that high school students are offered.

look up the medical reserve corp. This is made up of medical personnel that want to help in emergencies but can also help out with their local health dept. In the recent hurricane Sandy we used our medical reserve corp to help in shelters for medically fragile people forced out of their homes and some people were activated to go directly to where they were needed. You tell them what you are willing to do. I volunteer with my local MRC and help with everything from flu clinics when I can to emergency care during hurricanes and other emergencies. If a national emergeny were to happen, I would be able to respond if I was called because I am registered. Other nurses would not be able to do that, because they have no way of verifying your license and skills. And if you want more work, you could call your local planned parenthood, or public clinics.

i just wanted to add that this is a national medical reserved corp, then you choose your state, and your county etc. and from there you have the ability to say when where and how you will work for them!

Have you tried just googling free clinics in your area? I know the Glendale free clinic uses volunteer employees. There are nurses, doctors, pharmacists, FMGs, and NP students there so it is a good learning environment.

Also try your county public health department.

Glendale free clinic is only open on Tuesday from 5-ish pm until we are done. May be 8-9 pm. You can go home before that if you want. It is nice if you don't want to volunteer everyday.
