Voice Recorders

Can anyone recommend a good voice recorder? Their are so many to choose from.

I have a SONY ICD and I love it. It is extremely clear and I can connect it to my laptop via USB. I download the lecture recording directly on my notes that I typed in Microsoft OneNote. The recording then just sits with my class notes.

It's great for review and also great for going back and filling in any holes in the notes.

Thanks for all the suggestions. This pen looks neat! I may have to investigate this one some more!

I'd be interested in knowing more about the Livescribe. Amazon doesn't have any user ratings yet. My daughter is going into nursing school this fall and that seems like a great gift but the fact is that you have to take some notes to playback the lecture where as a voice recorder there's no need to take notes during class. Please post more info if you get any.

Thanks.

I just did a quick search and you can go to livescribe.com and it tells all what it does. I will have to look into it later today.

Kathy AMazon has a ton of ratings for the Smart Pen. There are 51 ratings for the 1GB:

There are 81 ratings for the 2GB:

Also you don't have to take notes to play the lecture. You can listen to the lecture through the pen with headphones or download it onto your computer. But the magic of the Smart Pen is that 2 hrs into a 4 hour lecture you can tap your notes and the recording will go right to that spot.

Plus I found out you don't have to buy the paper. You can print the paper from their web site.

I have ADHD and all the people in the DSPS (Disabled Students Programs and Services) are raving about this thing. In the past week it has come up several times. I just think it has not caught on yet.

My contact in the tech dept at the DSPS just sent me a detailed video of a demo she made of a student and the Smart Pen.

She sent it using transferbigfiles.com so you can download it by going here:

http://www.transferbigfiles.com/Get.aspx?id=66dde759-0fd9-4d5b-a3bc-9245c2a3b08a

I hope this works post a link for downloading. I think www.transferbigfiles.com only keeps files for a certain amount of time.

The demo is even more info than you need. The student goes through everything. It is about 9 min long and every question you would have is answered.

I don't know much about the LiveScribe (though having to buy and use their special paper limits its appeal to me).

I did want to mention, however, that I've found the power of a voice recorder to be as an adjunct to note taking and not as a replacement. I would record the lecture while taking notes and then occasionally jot down the elapsed time in my notes so that I could correlate my written notes with the same point in the lecture. I would also whisper occasional thoughts and comments into the recorder that would've taken too long to write down.

The LiveScribe looks cool but I think I'd prefer a good DVR instead.

It does function as a DVR as well and you can download the files on your computer and listen to them on your ipod. Check out the link I posted and then download the 9 min video.

You can also whisper into the pen.

I just wanted to add another good thing to use your voice recorder for. Today I did a homework assignment for my online pharmacology class. Since I knew I would only be able to log into it one time, I turned on my recorder and read aloud the questions and answers as I completed the assignment. That way I could type up the test-style assignment and use it to study for my exam! I am really glad I did it too because at the end when you get your score it does not show you what you got wrong. I was able to review all the questions and answers.:typing

Well, I never would have thought of that. Some people are more resourceful than others!

For me, the biggest value of my voice recorder was in gather care-plan data at clinicals. It could take upward of an hour to write it all down. I would just sit with my recorder and read off lab data, MD reports, pt. graphics, etc and then transcribe it when I got home. Saved a ton of time and I never had to go back in to the hospital in order to collect data.
