Virginia nurse roll call

Published

Specializes in Med-Surg, LTC, Rehab.

Just wanted to see how the Virginia nurses on this board are doing and kinda get a feel for how many are still posting or lurking. How's life treating you? Where are you at in your nursing career?

I'll start. I graduated in 12/08 and I am now in my 9th week of a 12 week orientation on a med-surg/oncology floor. I have my good days at work and my bad days. Mostly, I contribute my bad days to being new and trying to get in the swing of things.

So, who's next?

Specializes in Surgical Trauma Burn ICU, Oncology.

Hey! I love oncology...where do u work?

I am a new grad (10 days away to be exact) and moving to Charlottesville for my fiancé to start residency in July. I am still waiting to here back from interviews which is no fun.

Specializes in EMS, ED, Trauma, CEN, CPEN, TCRN.

I'm a new-ish grad ... 9.5 months and counting! :D I work in an ED. Started orienting in August, on my own by November. I've had good days and bad days, as I'm sure we all have. Today was ... hectic, to say the least. If I have to tell one more symptom-free person that NO, they CANNOT have a flu test, I might go nuts. ;)

So people are getting that paranoid? I totally respect ED nurses. It seems like a little too traumatic for me. LOL

Specializes in Emergency.

Hi,

I'm in Hampton Roads area. Graduated 2 years ago. On a cardiac/telemetry/medicine unit. Love it and hate it, but have had the same job since graduating. For all you new nurses, it gets better. But you will still have good and bad days. I really do mostly love it.

Cardiac can be fun, but really challenging. One good thing...I'm NEVER bored!.

Specializes in Med-Surg, Stepdown, Vascular ICU.

I'm in Hampton Roads also. Graduated Dec.07. Working surgical (med/surg dumping ground) currently. Have mixed feelings about what I'm doing. More bad days then good. Looking to transition into cardiology somehow. Have an interview this week on a PCU unit, wish me luck!

i'm so jealous of yall for HAVING jobs period! t-2 months til the move to charlottesville and no job yet ):

Hi. Older 2nd Degree BSN graduate. Here in Hampton Roads. Graduated in Dec '08 from NSU, was working at a Sentara hospital, but was asked to transfer as of April '09 after only a month on the floor. Was actually hoping to transfer to Sentara Leigh, and so far one of the units that I wanted to transfer to said that they just hired somebody.

Someone told me that Leigh has a longer orientation than the hospital I'm technically still a part of, which only has 6 weeks of orientation. BTW, thanks al7139 for giving me those suggestions.

Believe it or not, really not getting paid right now, but still in the Sentara system, so I can look for jobs internally and thus have more jobs available than some looking externally. For some reason, my manager said "you have potential" and don't give up on nursing, which is encouraging. Anyway, hoping for the best.

Thankfully, the swine flu panic has ebbed a bit. Yay!

I've been a paramedic since 2003 and an ED tech (in the same ED) since 2005, so the ED was a good fit for me. No regrets on starting my second career at the age of 36. :D Ha!

Good for you. That's great! I started my career just shy of my 40th birthday. Some mornings I get up and wonder why I decided to put my brain and body through this torture. But in the long run it's worth it.

Good luck to you guys looking for jobs. Just keep plugging along and you'll find something. Be persistent. When I was looking, the hospitals that weren't hiring at first were hiring the following month. Of course, they started calling after I had all ready accepted a position. rme

Have you found something? UVA is hiring, Martha Jefferson and there are several decent nursing homes in the area/

Good luck. I am across the mountain....
