Virginia nurse roll call

Published

Just wanted to see how the Virginia nurses on this board are doing and kinda get a feel for how many are still posting or lurking. How's life treating you? Where are you at in your nursing career?

I'll start. I graduated in 12/08 and I am now in my 9th week of a 12 week orientation on a med-surg/oncology floor. I have my good days at work and my bad days. Mostly, I contribute my bad days to being new and trying to get in the swing of things.

So, who's next?

Specializes in Surgical Trauma Burn ICU, Oncology.

i worked as a tech on the hematology/oncology floor for 2 years before nursing school and i LOVED it. the patients are absolutely wonderful and become like family (as does their family). it is also very interesting and you are always learning, which i love. good luck!

Did you get to see what kind of care the patients got? Is it more typical of a med-surg floor, or are there big differences? What was your typical workday like?

im not sure about all heme/onc floors, but that one definitely stood out from general med/surg floors...no other pts were aloud to be admitted to the floor if they werent heme/onc or sickle cell (rarely) b/c the cancer pts are so sick...or can get so sick. the bone marrow transplant hall was half the unit and they were often getting BMTs on the floor which is intense b/c the nurse has to sit at their bedside the entire time (as with certain chemos that are new to the pt). so, in other words, no, i don't think it was even close to being a typical med/surg floor, BUT that was just MUSC so idk about other places

hello, congrats, you got a job now, which hospital are u working now and how was it being a beginner?

Hi VA nurses,

I just graduated in May '09 and just passed boards - I'll be starting on an oncology unit in a couple weeks. Speaking of - anybody have any good input regarding oncology and what all it entails? Unfortunately never got into the oncology clinical during school.

Thanks! :)

Howdy, Guess today is my official first day as a RN, as I wrote NCLEX yesterday and got the results this morning. Nice to have that behind me. Start at end of Aug at reston Hospital on the PCU (cardiac) Looking forward to it, as I had a great time there on my preceptorship.

Congratulations and good luck on the new job!
