Hi, my name is Mike. I'm opening this thread to connect with other people who are applying or have been accepted to the BSNExpress program at Villanova for Spring 2015. Feel free to share any thoughts and suggestions you might have and to ask questions. Hopefully this forum can serve as a way for us to get to know each other a bit prior to the start of the program.
Each class has an exam at the end, if you do not get above 70% on each exam, you are dropped from the cohort all together, but they will offer to let you attend the next years class. For example, your first two weeks are "Introduction to Nursing", at the end of that class you are given an exam and you must score above a 70% in order to stay in the program.
The course I was dropped for was Medsurge which is hard as hell, but I think my issue was that I didn't study hard enough because I only got a 68% and was ultimately dropped from the program. This program is so fast paced, you have to spend every waking moment studying or you will most defiantly not make it. If I can give a potential student any advice it would be to not get comfortable, the summer session is extremely easy, but becomes crazy in the fall. Also you will be dropped for getting below 70% per exam because each course has it's own exam every two weeks and you must score 70% or better, please don't get comfortable like I did, it's worth it to put your life on hold for the 14 months studying. You will be tested every two weeks for the entire program, the only time you do not have a written test is when your in your clinical, which by the way, you have to pass as well in order to stay in the program. When I was in my first clinical I hated it, I had never changed so many bed pans or cleaned so many sputum suction bottles, I was gagging every day, but once your an RN you won't have to do those things the LPN's do it.
JoeJoe3 I think you're saying the same thing that everyone else is saying. If you have three exams in a class, it's important to pass with above a 73 for each test in order to pass the course overall. Like someone pointed out, it states that pretty clearly in the student manual that's on the website.
Sorry you did not succeed in the program but I'm glad you're getting another chance. Do you think you really want to do nursing? I'm asking because the way you describe it, it sounds like you did not enjoy it very much. I think there's a reason why they teach you to change bedpans, as annoying as it may be, because you will probably have to do it at some point. Just from going through the articles on this website, you'll see very quickly that no one is above doing a certain thing, and that regardless if you're a doctor or LPN, you may have to change diapers or bed pans for a patient. I think if you go in expecting that you may have to do 'menial' stuff along with passing your classes you will have an easier time.
I know what I wrote sounds like someone that should rethink becoming a Nurse. I just wanted to pass on some of my experiences, I spent 28 years in the Navy as a Combat Flight Medic and have seen much worse than the occasional nasty bed pan, all I wanted to do was give an example of what I had to do during clinical, I guess it just was expressed wrong.
And you are correct, each course in the summer, Intro to Nursing, Health Assessment, Nursing Care of Older Adults etc. all have written exams at the end, you have to score the 73% after each course to continue. Let's say if you scored a 69% on the first two week course "Intro to Nursing" your gone !! when I first started, one person failed the Intro to Nursing course and she was gone after just being in school for the first two weeks.
^^Wow your previous career sounds amazing! That's quite a change.
Thanks for sharing your experience. I can definitely attest to becoming comfortable because something seems easy initially. I nearly failed one of my master's classes because of it. When I say I literally passed by the skin of my teeth...lesson learned there! Now I'm much more vigilant about that.
@KAB123 mine was also updated to 'Decision Made- Notification Sent' today!!!! I hope we both hear by Saturday's mail.
I also just checked my Spring registration and there are only 3 people in my Patho class at CCRI so it might get canceled, and I might need to take it online anyway. K.B. sent me the list of approved classes today, but I'm going to try to get into the Villanova class online- there seem to be 28 seats left right now. At this point between undergrad, study abroad, grad school, and pre-reqs I have attended so many universities that limiting the number of transcripts I have is a big plus, haha.
Let me know if you hear good news KAB123! I'm rooting for you!
