Nurses General Nursing

Hi everyone. I go to a terrible school but am too advanced in the

I also experienced some jerk professors in nursing school. You know the saying, "nurses eat their young". I was very surprised by these sharks. I always thought nurses would be compassionate and excited to teach the new generation of nurses. Not always so. I have heard many horror stories of nursing instructors trying to "break" their students. In my school, there was the constant, lingering threat of getting kicked out if you didn't pass a math test, etc. It's such a joke because nursing school is nothing like real nursing. Just jump through the hoops and get through it, knowing it will be totally different after you graduate. Plus, many professors like that have personality problems or bad people skills and couldn't cut it in the real world. It's hard to find good nursing professors because they don't pay them enough! (I should also add that there are many good professors too, obviously.) Anyway, if I were you, I would request that you get assigned a different clinical instructor. I know of other students who have done that before. Just say that you think you would do better with a different instructor (maybe because she makes you nervous, or something - whatever. You're paying a lot of money to go to school, so you should have some say in your education.

Right on!!!

Ruby, I'm finding myself agreeing with you.

I'm Canadian and have never heard of a school up here charging only $97/session. Trust me on this one. My programme wasn't the greatest, but there was always recourse through the Dean of Nursing and the administration of the school.

I went to school with people who always went back to "biggotry" or "racism" to explain their results. Many times it was a case of cultural differences and how they were used to doing things in their country of origin.

Irregardless of tuition (I've never heard of tuition that low either), the college in my area that offers the RPN/LPN program has a system in place for students who felt they had been treated unfairly. I would think that the Dean of Nursing and the Dean of the College would find it VERY peculiar for a student with a 90% average to suddenly drop to 25%.

The clinical portion of a nursing program is more subjective, and in this portion I could easily see where an instructor may be biased. Clinical assignments were also not graded, although they could be marked as incomplete by an instructor AND that would impact on whether I passed or failed that clinical rotation. I'm still curious as to how testing is done where the OP is being schooled. When I took the RPN/LPN course back in '92, the college I attended marked ALL tests by computer, in fact it wouldn't have mattered if the instructor hated my guts, they did not mark my tests.

In the final exam of the course, I got a 40% (the LOWEST grade in my life), even though I know I did good.

i am the one who went from 90 to 25 and i did a year of medschool before going to nursing school and im a serious student and this is no urban legend this actually happened to me.

Which is it? 40% or 25%.

There is a hugh difference between 90% and 40%, or 90% and 25%. I'm sorry, but I'm having a hard time believing that an instructor would be that biased enough to sabotage a student's grades in such a BLATENT and OBVIOUS manner.

Why haven't you taken this to the Dean of Nursing or the Dean of the College? If your grades have dropped this much you really wouldn't have anything to lose. There has to be more to this story.

I had this happen..One particular instructor does not like me..She usually knocks off more points on my papers. The papers and exams are written and there is no multiple choice...One time, I got the same answer as my classmate, and I still got knocked off points; the question was to define a term..And another time in a written essay exam, all my classmates got 90s to high 80s and I got the lowest score, 75..She did not want me to pass..Right now there is one final left until I graduate..Yes, right now, I am worried that I might not pass..But these things do happen..

And another time, in a multiple choice exam, I got a certain percentage correct but the points did not match up to the percentage. The points were lower and students get graded by the points recieved...I did not know if this was a mistake or it was intentional but I went to the director about it and got my points..

We donnt really have a clear understanding of your situation, but I do believe that there are instructors who are witches who will fail you on the clinical portion based on how well you kiss thier butt. It was a big problem at the local adn school. We didnt have that problem, but I heard /saw it first hand while I was working and the summer students were in clinical....

I wish you the best of luck.

I actually had my second semester clincal instructer try to fail me. She always gave me grief. One day we were going over IM inj. I was doing it the way the book and the first semester instructer taught me. She felt as if that wasnt right and was telling me that I had one more chance the next day to get it right. Well fortunantly my first semister inst. was in the room when she was making a butt out of her self and corrected her very quickly. She was the only instructer that ever had a problem with me or gave me crap.

Wow, lots of energy about this.

However, the second issue is in re: recreation for psych patients.

I like to play a game called "Try 5." Make a 6x6 grid on a white (or black) board. Ask the patients (need at least 6, but I've done it w/as many as 20 and the more the merrier) to call out 5 letters of the alphabet, and write them in the first column of boxes on the left of the grid. Them ask for 5 catagories of items that have lots of items in them (cars, animals, foods, plants, gems and minerals, etc.)and write them in the top row of boxes. Then ask the group to think of and call out the names of at least 5 of each catagory that begins w/ each letter. PM me if this is not clear. It is loads of fun, and the patients do not know that they are developing executive function when they play. All you have to do is stand up there and say "good one":yeah: and write down the choices.

Hi everyone,

I agree with lovemyjob. I had a psych instructor who was my classroom instructor as well as my clinical instructor. All while we were doing clinicals, I thought I was doing fine, but to my knowledge as time went on she was always picking on me. From my earrings which I knew to take off when I got to the floor, (it is just a bad habit i have sleeping with them on and then shooting out the house) to how friendly me and my friend was with a patient. I remember one time she told us to try to get ppl to go to an art session and after that we were done. My friends patient came up to us and we asked him if he was going. He said no, so I told him it would be good for him to go and yada yada yada and she totally took us to the side and told my friend that she was standing with her boobs all in his face and that my hair is seen as flirtatious. I did not find that our conversation was being flirtatious with a schizophrenic patient. She is such a witch. Stuff like that, just blowing things out of proportion.

I did my comprehensive care plan and I gave her the wrong version of my paper, I printed out the rough draft instead of the good draft, I remember that day it was crazy in my house my daughter screaming and my son yelling, so my attention was not on the paper. Anyway, she said that I can give her the right one. So I did, and she gave me a 98 but took off 10 pts because she had to reread it. At the end with my evaluation, she says, I wish I could give everyone an A for clinical but I don't see this in your case. I did what I had to do and I did not kiss up to her. Her statement was clearly personal because I did not talk to her. She told me that I stayed away from her on purpose and she wanted to get to know me as a student. For what????? I don't associate with professors that make me uncomfortable. I will answer their questions and do what I have to do to pass the class, but I sure as hell am not going to be her friend. Because I would not tell her personal business of mine, which is none of her business, she took it out on me. It is alot more stuff, but just so you all would get the jist of the story.

I did well in her class, but all the things she made me do over brought me down a half a letter grade. she took points off for rereading my paper over. That was my point to make my grade higher so I had a redo of another paper. She gave me a 78 for it by taking off 10 points when I really should have gotten an 88. This is what I mean, she had it out for me and did not want me to get a B- in the class. I wound up with a 79.95 for a C+. She absolutely was not going to give me the B-. But that is ok. Do what you have to do to pass because I know, I don't have to see this witch again. I was upset that she did this to me, but what can you do. I passed and it is over.

And just to end, we thought that she was discriminating to us to, because the minorities she would take off major points. What, does she not think we talk to each other???? I don't understand. We compared papers and my other friend who is not a minority, made do her comprehensive care plan three times and did not take off points for rereading hers. This happened with two other girls as well. But why was she taking off 10 points for us???? We will never know!!!!

Good luck with your situation. I got through it and you can too...

Ruby i write my exams in my native language, (not in english) which is perfect. you seem to very obsessive about grammar and punctuation i can assure you it has nothing to do with it. Thanks for your advice though,

Wow well i thought this was a nursing forum and not a forum for people with master degrees in english. Clarification grade went from 90 to 40. And if you dont believe the tuition part look up tuitions in canadian technical colleges. I.Anyway thanks to all you guys who were nice and understanding.I appreciate it.

Nothing that you've posted fits the critera of bigotry. How has your instructor treated you unfairly in matters or race, religious preference, or political afiliation? I haven't seen anything you've mentioned that supports that.

If you keep posting in this manner, your posts could be deemed as slanderous or libelous, which could cause you a lot of harm. Hopefully, no one from your school will be able to identify himself/herself in what you have written.

Then you must write them in French? If so, I'm assuming you are in Quebec.

I am just finishing my RPN here in Ontario. I don't know really what you mean about Canadian Technical Colleges....I go to a Community College, which is about as low as you can get...but Quebec is a different world than the rest of Canada. Here, "Technical Colleges" are for-profit private schools that charge more, not less, than a government-run facility. Not subsidized you know.

All of my RPN exams have been graded by a computer, except for one test, this past (final) semester. And only 10% of that was done by hand, short answers. The rest were multiple choice, on a computer card.

But there were papers a'plenty, and yes, grammar and punctuation are extremely, extremely important.

Sanchy, the way you present yourself in any form of written communication indicates a level of thought and intelligence. You don't have to be perfect, the odd typo is not unusual, but you have to make your posts clear and coherent. THAT is why some are linking your drop in grades to perhaps a correlation with a written communication issue. Written communication is such an important part of nursing - a critical part!

What part of the country DO you go to school in? You've already said you go to a "technical" school so I'm assuming it's not a College.
