Hi everyone. I go to a terrible school but am too advanced in the

Just my opinion, but if this is discrimination you may be able to file a complaint w/the school- or the state-- not sure who you'd go to, but you should be documenting what you're perceiving as bigotry- aka discrimination, which is illegal.

Without proof theres not much that you can do. How do you know that the people that got failing grades didn't really fail the test. Why would she bother giving someone such low grades, like a 25 if they didn't deserve them. She could easily fail them with a grade in the 70s if she wanted to.

Of course I'm not there so really I have no idea what might be going on. Something does not sound quite right about this whole story though.

Wishing you better luck!

Maybe I'm missing something here but I'm not picking up on any bigotry based on your post.

When I was in school, tests were pretty cut and dry. Most were multiple choice and not up for debate. Maybe an instructor could get by with taking a couple of questions from you.....but from a 90 to a 40?? ....hmmm....

I guess just more info is needed.

I also experienced some jerk professors in nursing school. You know the saying, "nurses eat their young". I was very surprised by these sharks. I always thought nurses would be compassionate and excited to teach the new generation of nurses. Not always so. I have heard many horror stories of nursing instructors trying to "break" their students. In my school, there was the constant, lingering threat of getting kicked out if you didn't pass a math test, etc. It's such a joke because nursing school is nothing like real nursing. Just jump through the hoops and get through it, knowing it will be totally different after you graduate. Plus, many professors like that have personality problems or bad people skills and couldn't cut it in the real world. It's hard to find good nursing professors because they don't pay them enough! (I should also add that there are many good professors too, obviously.) Anyway, if I were you, I would request that you get assigned a different clinical instructor. I know of other students who have done that before. Just say that you think you would do better with a different instructor (maybe because she makes you nervous, or something - whatever. You're paying a lot of money to go to school, so you should have some say in your education.

does your instructor not go over the test or have it available in office hours? have you gone to her to express your concerns about your score and ask for help?

i'm not sure how this comes down to bigotry

We always went over tests the next day. Although our finals were always a mystery since noone ever got to see those. I guess technically if they wanted to they could throw you any grade they wanted on those. I dont know that the instructors i had would have done that though. They were usually pretty thorough and straight up.

Hope you get some satisfaction on this somehow.

How do you propose this instructor is manipulating test scores? Is marking/testing not done by computer under your student number?

The only area where I could see an instructor being biased and able to get away with it is in the clinical area.

I'm with shock-me-sane.

Could you possibly ask the instructor to go over the exam with you in her office hours? Many instructors are open in allowing you to go with that option and I don't think I've come across any that wouldn't. That way, you can gauge if there really is any wrong doing or incorrect grading on your exam.

If you did make mistakes and the exam was marked correctly, a lot of instructors are willing to give pointers on what information are relevant for the next exam.

Most of the tests I took in nursing school were multiple choice or fill in the blank. That didn't leave much room for debate.

I'm not sure how different your teacher gives tests, but if you feel you are being wronged you should contact the state board of nursing and the state board of education ASAP.

Go to the instructor and ask her to review the exam with you. XXXX but it is highly unl;ikely she would give you a poor grade if you answered most of the questions correctly.

You need to put yourself forward and demonstrate that you want to do well. Get the chip off your shoulder and find out where you need improvement.

I think the original poster needs to find out why the instructor is giving her the grades she does without assuming that it is bias.

While it is true she may be friendlier with some students than others, it could also be that those students are getting better grades because they are better students.

even if the instructor is biased, there is nothing th eorginal poster can do to change that. S/he can only control her own thoughts and actions. If she thinks she is doing well, she needs to show her instructore that she is trying hard and wants to do well.
