Very nervous about my third semester of nursing!

Published

Hello, I just finished my second semester of my bachelors in nursing and med surge was kind of hard for me but thank god I ended up passing. Next semester, I have pych, OB, and med surge 2. I am very nervous because I struggled before with one class. The exams were just something different for me. I studied so hard, got some tips from other students, and I improved but I really would like to see if anybody knows some good practice books for psych, OB, and med surge 2. Are they hard? I know that OB and Psych are lots of material. Any tips to maintain good grades and understand the material well?

Also, I am very nervous about Psych clinical. Its because these people are different and some seem aggressive. Im afraid I will get attacked or something lol, lets pray I dont, but I am just worried.....

Sooooooo....?? Any tips to help me with OB, PSYCH, and MED SURGE?

Psych patients are generally not aggressive. Don't go into those clinicals thinking otherwise. One of my most pleasant patients was actually a psych patient. A nice guy with a wife and kids that just couldn't take his depression anymore. I have depression and anxiety problems, so I really connected with him. I ended up being his favorite person just because I retrieved a book for him that the nurses never bothered to give him. Also worked with some schizophrenic patients that semester that were very sweet. Psych patients are patients just like anyone else, they are mostly just misunderstood. A huge part of psychiatric nursing is learning how to communicate with patients. So practice that therapeutic communication :) OB is hard for some...but it was my first A in nursing school. I think just learning how to think like a nurse is the hard part, but it sounds like your last semester gave you some good practice with that! I only used the textbooks we were assigned. I skimmed the material and did lots of practice questions.

Our school uses the Hogan series "Reviews and Rationales" as supplementary texts. I just finished OB (with an A) and found this book more useful than the actual text. I think these books are available for any nursing class. There are practice tests in each chapter and the material is really condensed to "need to know" information.

I agree with Racer15 and winterlights08.

Don't stress over meeting psych patients. You will also be accompained by staff trained to tackle any patient that starts to get violent or show signs of frustrations. That was actually one of the clinicals I enjoyed.

The Mary Ann Hogan series of "Reviews and Rationales" are the bomb! Definitely buy those !!!

:)

Psyche...most likely will need to your know meds by category very well; safety, suicide precautions, and seizure precautions (alcohol w/d), are priorities no matter what (of course in addition to ABCs), therapeutic communication.

OB...read read read...there are many concepts in this course and it really requires some paying attention to

Thank you for your support. I really appreciate it. I really plan on maintaining A's in my courses, even though they say C is the new A in nursing school. I try my best to understand the material and use it accurately and wisely during my exams. I will definitely get that book you recommended. Thanks again!
