Verbal abuse at work

Nurses New Nurse

Published

I am a fairly new nurse and unfortunately had an episode of verbal abuse at work. I had a male coworker call me a " ******* *****" in front of all my coworkers. It was extrememly disrespectful and very humiliating. He has had issues with other nurses as well. I had reported it to my ADN. What disciplinary actions are usually done in this scenario? I only ask becuase this incident happened a week ago and my ADn has yet to address the issue.

Thanks in advance.

When he was giving report, he would often use the P word instead of saying lady parts.

I'm sorry that happened and it is unacceptable.

I'm very thankful to work on a unit where, if any nurse tried this (especially a male one) the other RNs would hand his ass to him verbally, administratively, and probably physically.

Good grief, I would actually wonder if he was really a nurse. I had male nurses care for me on two shifts after neck surgery, they were wonderful, absolutely professional.

My guess is that the percentage of jerks and pathetically nasty humans is probably the same among nurses as it is in the general population; being a nurse is no guarantee of being pleasant, caring, or even compassionate.

The verbal abuse is completely unacceptable and the failure to act upon it in a timely manner is outrageous. Maybe I've led a sheltered life, but any facility I've worked at would respond with at least a suspension, in fact the two similar incidents I witnessed resulted in termination. This is not sexual harrassment. It is abusive behavior towards a group of coworkers (everyone is affected by this), undermining morale, standards of care and safety. Please don't feel humiliated by this. Outraged yes, but not humiliated. The only fool here is Mr. Mouth.

Stop acting like a ******* ***** and maybe these types of incidents will stop happening to you. Joking, obviously. Standing up for yourself and actually doing something is a big deal as a new nurse - good for you. I find it incredible that some guys, nurses and doctors, are incapable of controlling their *****bag impulses. Is your job and/or your license really worth it? What do you get out of saying something completely unprofessional and inappropriate? Are you that emasculated at home that you need to grossly overcompensate at work? It's bizarre. I'm not going to defend men and say it's a two-way street (mostly because I enjoy an occasional pat on the bottom from my female coworkers or a wink from an attractive tech who may not know or care that I am married to the most transcendently beautiful woman in recent history). I will say, however, that sexual harassment would be a stretch for this incident. But, whatever, if that's the best way for this person to get what he deserves (comeuppance!), then so be it.

You've received some good advice from your peers; especially, documentation (!) by virtue of utilizing your facility's electronic incident report system for situations like this. They have also used terms like "sore balls" and "AWESOME hooters" in their responses, which makes your post an unmitigated success in my estimation. Well done & good luck, you ******* *****.

******* ***** = what? awesome nurse? winsome woman? I think it's funny we all think we know what he called you because we counted the number of asterisks.

Creep.

My thoughts exactly. Not only creep but what a pig!

Any update?

Yes, some of us are hoping he got what he deserves.

Yeah, the last guy that called me that got socked in the mouth by my brother, who is normally quiet and mellow :smokin:
