Oh geesh, classes have just started and ALREADY I have a problem.
You see I'm a vegetarian and my lab for Anatomy and Physiology has a part to it that is dissecting a cat. Problem is I have a respect for life and am a strict vegetarian (no leather, meat of any kind, etc.) This is part of the reason why I want to become a nurse - to help the world not hurt it. If I dissect a cat then I will be directly responsible for that cat having been killed. What should I do? The lab (as a whole) looks like it is one third of the final grade. I've already emailed the dean of students, and I'm waiting to hear back from him. I can't imagine that I'm the only one to ever have had this problem. Nursing schools weigh GPA very heavily. I want to kick ass.. any suggestions?
I can look in on others doing a dissection (as that is their own choice), but if I do it myself then I become responsible. Sigh.
Thank you in advance..
I pray you will learn tolerance and sensitivity through out your college experience. Also, you should really try to educate yourself a little more about things that you really don't know anything about. I am guessing that you are really really young and lack many life experiences. Please try to acquire some before you embark on a very emotionally demanding career that requires respect and tolerance to diversity.
...and some day you'll wake up and be a meat eater again. When that happens you'll be upset that you couldn't get through nursing school because of a stupid dead cat. I'm a guy, I went through my veggie phase, I grew out of it (steaks are yummy once again!), and I'm guessing you will too.If not, the cats already dead and you're not required to eat it (right?) so relax and take solace in the fact that you're putting some feral cat to good use.

being old and having "experienced" life will not make you any more tolerant or sensitive, nor will it make you any more intelligent. let's discuss two false statements made by you, over30nursingstudent, in a previous post:
Disecting an animal will never ever prepare anyone for what lies ahead in nursing, period!!
except if you have to pass the class so that a school will allow you to take the NCLEX (you see how its all related?).
Anyway, institutions cannot force some to disect if it is a conflict to your beliefs.
a private institution can...especially considering the current clinical shortages, if you don't like it there are plenty of other prospective nurses that wouldn't think twice to dissect a cat - a hard and simple truth.
btw...you guessed wrong and the fact that WE're over 30 doesn't qualify you or me to be an expert on tolerance and sensitivity. regarding the complete protein thing, i may be misinformed (and I may not) but it doesn't matter, i eat meat.

Well said, tyler. If someone doesn't want to do the job that is required, he or she needs to start looking into being an accountant or something instead.
What are these people thinking they will do later? "I don't want to wipe that person's butt. I guess I will have a hissy-baby fit & see if I can get out of it and still pass this class with an A."
I understand one's desire to not eat meat, as well as one's desire to not dissect animals, however, I also think this country is getting too whiney & needs to suck it up and get over things.
