Oh geesh, classes have just started and ALREADY I have a problem.
You see I'm a vegetarian and my lab for Anatomy and Physiology has a part to it that is dissecting a cat. Problem is I have a respect for life and am a strict vegetarian (no leather, meat of any kind, etc.) This is part of the reason why I want to become a nurse - to help the world not hurt it. If I dissect a cat then I will be directly responsible for that cat having been killed. What should I do? The lab (as a whole) looks like it is one third of the final grade. I've already emailed the dean of students, and I'm waiting to hear back from him. I can't imagine that I'm the only one to ever have had this problem. Nursing schools weigh GPA very heavily. I want to kick ass.. any suggestions?
I can look in on others doing a dissection (as that is their own choice), but if I do it myself then I become responsible. Sigh.
Thank you in advance..
You do not need to disect a cat to pass the nclex exam. Shortages or not, it is really silly for you to even assume that. Maybe you need to inform yourself on that as well. As far as sensitivity and lack of life experience goes, you showed how defensive and intolerant you are to the diversity of others when you responded about the op's situation. I don't care what you or anyone else eats or how you live your life. I have a huge problem with people who refuse to fully educate themselves about the diversity of others and pretend to know it all. Here is a Hard and simple truth: Life experiences do make you more sensitve, tolerant, empathetic, and intelligent; granted you are willing to learn from your own mistakes and willing to learn from past experiences with those you cared for professionally. Lastly, we live in a very diverse society where people have many different belief systems etc. In a hospital setting as a nurse you will be treating patients who have different beliefs than yourself and although you may not agree with their beliefs I would hope you would remain respectful. and Trust me you are wrong about complete proteins :)
being old and having "experienced" life will not make you any more tolerant or sensitive, nor will it make you any more intelligent. let's discuss two false statements made by you, over30nursingstudent, in a previous post:except if you have to pass the class so that a school will allow you to take the NCLEX (you see how its all related?).
a private institution can...especially considering the current clinical shortages, if you don't like it there are plenty of other prospective nurses that wouldn't think twice to dissect a cat - a hard and simple truth.
btw...you guessed wrong and the fact that WE're over 30 doesn't qualify you or me to be an expert on tolerance and sensitivity. regarding the complete protein thing, i may be misinformed (and I may not) but it doesn't matter, i eat meat.

How in the world does disecting a cat and wiping butts having anything to do with one another? I already work at a hospital and have wiped many of butts to date, my dear! What are your religious beliefs? what if you were asked to do something in school that really conflicted with your beliefs? Its not about whinining and having a hissy fit. If you have a problem with civil liberties than maybe you should move where their are none.QUOTE=Fun2Care]Well said, tyler. If someone doesn't want to do the job that is required, he or she needs to start looking into being an accountant or something instead.
What are these people thinking they will do later? "I don't want to wipe that person's butt. I guess I will have a hissy-baby fit & see if I can get out of it and still pass this class with an A."
I understand one's desire to not eat meat, as well as one's desire to not dissect animals, however, I also think this country is getting too whiney & needs to suck it up and get over things.
You seem a little hostile over your vegetarian belief. I would of thought after all this time that you have been a vegetarian your "negative toxins would have been cleansed out".
My comment on wiping butts was merely a comment on things people have to do to get through nursing school whether they like it or not.
...and "my dear", the comment about wiping butts wasn't even directed towards you. Obviously if you are already a nurse you did whatever it took to get through nursing school.

The Only negative toxins I have are when people act prejudice and hostile towards those of us who believe and live differently. I am not a nurse yet, I am still in school but I did not disect anything in my a/p classes so I did and I do what it takes to get through and stay true to my beliefs MY DEAR!!
Please don't "my dear" me, that is getting a little out of hand.My comment on wiping butts was merely a comment on things people have to do to get through nursing school whether they like it or not.

I was going to reply, but you said it better. I am not suprised the OP split. He has a legitimate dilemma. I'm sure he can be a nurse without disecting a cat. I can't beleive the replies telling him to suck it up and such. Respecting ones belief system is so basic. Nursing 101. I think it's more a lack of understanding, as the types of comparisons being made to his situation show some just don't get it.

If you reread, I changed my post.
I completely agree with what you are saying, but at the same time, you seem to be getting over heated on the subject.
I personally don't care who eats meat, and who doesn't. I'm not going to gag someone with a turkey leg anytime soon, and I expect not to be gagged with a celery stalk. (YES, THIS IS ANOTHER ONE OF THOSE FIGURE OF SPEECHES NOT TO BE TAKEN EXTREMELY SERIOUS. A LITTLE LIKE THE WIPING BUTTS COMMENT!)
So, argument closed, as far as I'm concerned. We all need to spend more time keeping each other's motivation going, not bickering.
So, with that, good luck in your studies!
:) Thank you well said. I do not care what others eat. I said it before, it always comes to tolerance and respect of diversity, thats all. :)

This has been fun, on a boring Saturday night..............

I love a good debate....I should have taken debate class in high school! LOL Some people are just too serious on this site. I guess it's hard not knowing a person's personality.
I'd argue with a fence post, but I'd do everything I could to be nice to you. lol
I don't even have an opinion on this one......but I can't wait for you to get your acceptance letter and get started so you can tell us other DCCCD hopefuls the real scoop! I should probably find something more productive to do. Have a good night!
