HI,
I have applied to Vanderbilt, UVM and UMASS for Fall 2010. Has anyone else ? What are your stats. I am trying really hard to find out what my odds are and can not find anything on the web. Does anyone know where I can find out this information ? I am on the cut off line with GRE score and GPA for Vanderbilt. Any information would be very much apperciated
It's 2 years for those who have a degree in another field...but there are certain courses that are required, which you may or may not have taken as part of your degree. So, there could be some preparation prior to application. The required courses can be found on the VUSN website.
The first prespecialty year is all about becoming a generalist RN. Didactics and clinicals are concerned with nursing knowledge in all areas, which will be required for successful completion of the NCLEX exam. The second year is speciality-oriented with didactics and clinical hours pertaining to the chosen speciality area. Lots of info on the website...
I don't know about how others whom completed the program might answer that. Personally, I had many years (18+) in the medical field...I just wasn't an RN. For me, this wasn't the same as someone who comes in with no medical background who is learning a lot of new language, let alone concepts. Of course, the required pre-admission courses (which would be included in some other programs) add at least one year of full-time coursework. So I'm not sure the programs are so different; there are curriculum requirements that must be met for programs to be accredited so students can sit for NCLEX and individual speciality exams post-program and all schools must follow that curriculum plan.
Other programs I looked at that would take me 3 years to complete did not go through summer semester(s), where Vandy does. Also the amount of required clinical hours were the same, but the other programs strung them out over a much longer period of time.
I wish I had counted the number of times the word "accelerated" was used during the orientation week at Vanderbilt! They tell you up front and they MEAN it! I have close friends who are in traditional nursing programs elsewhere and they are able to maintain a more-or-less normal life with social events, an engagement and marriage, one has a young child and is a single mother, etc. I can not imagine attempting to do that while in an accelerated program.
I will be well-prepared to treat patients when I'm done and board certified, without a doubt. But everyone's experience is different of course.
creativetype...don't sweat the GRE too much. I bought a review book at Books A Million and read through it, worked some of the problems in the book, etc. over about 2-3 days and then took the test. The review books will give you hints for how to do well on the test; it's not really something you can cram for since it's testing not really knowledge, per se, but more your ability to learn and think through problems.
Let me know if you have any other questions I can help with.
Thank you mammac. So you are in the program now at Vanderbilt? I am going to apply for 2011. I am dreading the GRE though lol I'm not the best with those test even though I have a 4.0 with prerequsites. Thanks.
Actually, Vandy will waive GRE for a 4.0 I believe. They said they would waive for my 3.85 so your better grades should qualify.
This sucks bad.
I am just discovering Vandy...I just got my ADN and want to do their pre-specialty-ANP.
This really sucks. Want to start this fall. I just scheduled the GRE
I gotta call them & beg now.
Why is the deadline so far in advance? Sheesh!
I am still gonna apply and see what happens..
Does anyone have any encouraging words?
Hi Everyone
I am planning on applying to the Vandy dual FNP and CNM program for fall 2011. I have heard some mixed things about their program. For those of you who are currently in the accelerated program, how do you like it? I guess my only worry is that it only takes two years to get a Masters. At the same time this is very enticing part of their program. Thanks in advance for your advice
Hi,
I've got an acceptance into the accelerated program for Sep 11. I applied for Sept 10 and asked for a deferment for a year. I have looked at lots of programs and weighed the differences. If you want to start working fast and have some background in the area you will get your masters in this program is the best. It's expensive but worth it...because it's a year shorter than most programs. On the other hand if you are young and have lots of time another program might be better for you

I'm just curious, but for the pre speciality program (degree in another field to NP) is it a 2 year program all told, or more like 3? I am not an RN but have a bachelors degree and have been told different things. Thanks!
