Vanderbilt Pre-Specialty Entry 2021

Nursing Students School Programs

Published

I noticed there was not a thread created for Vanderbilt pre-specialty nursing for 2021, so I created one. Is anyone already preparing for this upcoming application cycle?

That's fantastic! How is it?

I was waitlisted and I believe (and hoping it's only this) it is because I made a mistake on my application. When I started the process I wanted to pursue NM/FNP but realized I really only want to be a midwife (and someday educator) but wasn't able to change this on the drop-down box on the application after I had completed more than half of it. I don't know why I didn't reach out and ask them how to change it, in my mind, I was just thinking oh when I get accepted I will just tell them. Not thinking that my essays and everything point to my pursuit to become a midwife and nothing about FNP. So of course the director of the FNP program was probably like nah ?. I emailed the department and told them of my mistake and the director of the NM program knows, but I am still waiting and hoping. ?

Oh no, I am so sorry that happened to you. Fingers crossed that you get in!!

My experience so far has been great. With COVID, the program and faculty really did everything they could to give us as much in person experience as possible, and all the professors have been so kind and knowledgeable. It is a super accelerated program which comes with its own challenges, but it is doable! You just have to prioritize staying on top of the material, and realize that you can't possibly know everything about everything. I am a bit of a perfectionist, so this took me some time haha but I am sure not everyone would struggle with that.

Clinical has been one of the best parts of the program as well. We do a 10 week rotation in the hospital as part of the "Fundamentals" course where you get acclimated to the program and nursing in general. Then you get to do 5 week rotations in Pediatrics, Psychiatry, Adult Health, and OB. That is what I am in the process of now, and I feel like I have learned SO much.

Not sure if that was the kind of information you were looking for, but feel free to message me if you have any questions!! ?

@nursethp     Have you started to arrange your clinicals for the APRN year? How are those in OMTA expected to arrange those?

Hi, yes! There are faculty members dedicated to just helping us with paperwork and giving us advice on how to contact clinical sites, but the process of actually finding and reaching out to possible preceptors is independent!

Hi there, some questions for any current Nurse Corps Scholarship or NHSC Scholarship recipients at VUSN:

1) What date were you notified that you received the award? The program guidance states notification is no later than 9/30/21 I am just curious how early we can expect to be notified.

2) I see that the first stipend payment is deposited in November. Did you pay for tuition with loans and have the loan canceled once you were notified of the award? Similarly, did you pay out of pocket for housing expenses from August-November? In general what does that process look like as far as applying for loans while waiting to be notified of the award?

3) If you are planning to continue for a DNP degree at Vanderbilt, can you extend the service commitment and continue having them cover tuition+stipend by request if funds are available, or would you need to reapply?

Thank you!

Would you please link the page that you are looking at for the Nurse Corps Scholarship?

Hello guys

I also came to know I got admitted in the full time FNP program at vanderbilt  as an OMTA student.

Is there anyone on here from CA also doing the OMTA?

Me! I’m from Socal and doing Nurse Midwifery.

Hi, friends! Just found this thread. I will be in the pre-spec Adult Gerontology Primary Care (AGPC) group this fall. I already live in the Nashville area, so I'd be happy to answer any questions about the Middle TN region, although Vanderbilt will be a totally new experience for me. Looking forward to August!

Anyone on the wait list hear back yet?

Hi Alex, what has admissions told you about the waitlist? I recall that in the past some people are pulled from the waitlist within a couple weeks of the start date. I hope you get off the waitlist.

Whats your specialty?

Has anyone whose been accepted applied for the nurse corps scholarship?

If so can you help me out? I just submitted my application but I was confused about the section where we had to put the dates of the program. The 2nd year includes Summer but they wouldn't let me put a date that ended in august so I put an extra 3rd year. Not sure if that was the right thing to do or I should have just done the 2 years and ended it earlier?

Is anyone else having sticker shock from the tuition cost and year 1 COA estimates?  I know this program is cheaper than Emory's but the total number for 2 years of education is quite high...  Is everyone banking on PSLF on the backside for repayment plans?

I think a lot of us are just hoping that we will have good paying jobs and be able to pay off our student loans eventually. Many of us have applied for the Nurse Corps Scholarship, some may be thinking about PSLF but for the most part all of us are just banking on it being worth it in the long run.
