Vanderbilt Pre-Specialty Entry 2021

Published

I noticed there was not a thread created for Vanderbilt pre-specialty nursing for 2021, so I created one. Is anyone already preparing for this upcoming application cycle?

I’ve read older threads and theirs said the third week of feb as week but they found out on Valentine’s Day

Hi everyone,

I am super late to the game and just discovered this thread but I thought I would reach out to you all! I applied by the priority deadline for the WHNP PreSpecialty track. When I applied, I chose to do my second year (specialty year) outside of the middle Tennessee area...was this a mistake? I took this to mean that I would be able to choose a location anywhere in the country to do my clinical/preceptor placements (ie I would potentially be able to live with my family back home in CA instead of another year in Nashville), but after reading through this thread I am beginning to doubt that and believe that they may place me anywhere in the country that they see fit? Would anyone be able to clarify this for me?

Also--I had reached out to admissions a few weeks ago re when decisions would be released and they confirmed by the third week of February. I would assume this to mean Feb 14 as that is the first day of the third week of February. (I guess it could also be interpreted as by the END of the third week of February, or Feb 21). Hope this helps ease some anxiety as we will find out relatively soon! These next few weeks feel eternally long as I am waiting to hear back from another school as well! Good luck to everyone!!

I applied for Midwifery so I am different because NM speciality year is in Nashville and then clinicals are in places within 4 hours I think. I am not exactly sure how it works, but I talked to a recently graduated FNP student who said that she did her specialty year in CA because she had family there. From what I heard, faculty work with you to try to place you where you want to be as long as they have a preceptor there. Not guaranteed, but I hear that faculty really helps with the process and wants to put you somewhere that you will want to be and succeed. So I don’t think it’s a random placement.

Hi! I applied a little after the deadline for the Pediatric Pre Specialty Track. Can confirm it’s not a random placement. They will work with you to choose a placement where you want. After I submitted my application Paddy reached out to me that my specialty would be impacted and priority to stay in Tennessee for clinical is given to those who applied by the deadline. Since I had initially chosen to want to stay in Tennessee she reached out and asked if I was willing to do my clinicals, should I be accepted, outside of the Middle Tennessee area. She let me know these can be anywhere in the country and generally recommend they are done back in our home city and state. I specified I wanted to come back to California where I’m from. They will also ask for the city too. Hope this helps ❤️

Patiently waiting....

Does anyone how we will receive the good news, Based on last years forum it looks like it will appear somewhere on the application portal.

After submitting the application and at open house they said decisions would be sent to your email

I put all my eggs in one basket..I only applied to Vanderbilt.

I only applied to Vanderbilt as well Jaqlyn. If I don't get accepted I have a back up plan. I applied for the nurse-midwifery program as well! I said I wanted to do the FNP as well but now have changed my mind. I am excited to have just found this thread, like today....

I'd be looking in either 12-South or Hillsboro. Both of these have great public schools that are diverse and the neighborhoods are supposed to be great, and near Vandy. It's expensive though. But for me it's that or move to the suburbs, and I don't think Nashville suburbs are my vibe.

I'm midwifery track too, btw. The great thing about relocating for a school program is you make friends (mostly) from your cohort. We'll be going through trial by fire together of an accelerated intense graduate program, which is a real bonding opportunity ?.

Hiya @secondtimer14 I applied to the midwifery program (only) and really hoping it works out. What are some takeaways from the prespecialty year that you wish you knew before but know now?

Hi all!

I just found this thread tonight. I read through the previous cycle earlier today, I am excited and feel we should find out next week based on when they found out. I live in NYC and applied to the nurse-midwifery program, this was my only application. I will do Yale next cycle if need be. I have never been to Nashville and feel like what @Asia8701 said we are dynamic and can adapt. Although as a POC who lives in Brooklyn I hope there is welcome diversity in Nashville. Very excited and looking forward to next week!

@JennyMc I too will and have already been looking for housing in 12-South and Hillsboro. It is pretty expensive. I have heard good things about Five Points. also very expensive LOL

I love what you stated about making  friends and going through trial by fire together in an accelerated intense graduate program, I'm really excited about that and I have a good feeling that we will be chatting in person very soon.

I feel satisfied to wait until the 15th or 16th based on the experiences of the previous cycle... We are almost there, these are the exciting parts of life!
