Vanderbilt Nurse Residency Winter 2021

Nurses General Nursing

Published

Hi guys!

I have not seen a thread for the Vanderbilt Nurse Residency program for Winter 2021 and thought I'd make one! I am currently in the process of applying. I am on my first part of my application. I would love to hear whose applying, what unit they are applying to and your experience so far!

Random thought: I've seen a few people mention the question of "why this unit" and I was just wondering how you even got to that point? Most tracks have multiple units in them so how were you able to express which one you wanted specifically? Was this desire honored or was it just a general type thing?

Also, did yall interview with the manager/person pictured with your unit on the NRP website, among others?

I honestly don’t know why they asked that especially if you didn’t get the unit you wanted... if you got a broad unit interview then I guess that would be a good time to just talk about the unit you want within that track and other details you remember about other tracks should you get something else

I haven’t interviewed yet, but when I turned in the second part of the application, it gave me options to specifically rank for units within Pediatrics and Adult critical care tracks I.e Adult ED, PICU. When I got my email for the interview it had me interviewing specifically for one unit. Is this not what everyone was offered?

I interviewed with the person in the profile, yes

Some people got an interview offer with another unit they didn’t choose propriety over or an acute track that had many special units within. The interview video you will receive prior to your interview states in the video that you should have an idea of what unit with the acute track you would like.

Hmm interesting. For the top three tracks I picked, I only was able to select the track overall. This included adult surgical, periop (duh no selection), and behavioral health. However, I did get to pick a specific unit from a peds track that was my fourth track. My invite to interview only listed the track though– adult surgical. I guess I’ll have to strongly hint at which unit I actually want LOL

For the ones that have gotten an interview/applied- if you wouldn’t mind sharing your stats, other things you did outside of nursing school. I’m wanting to apply for the Spring and I’m just curious what kind of GPA I would need to land an interview or what other things could increase my chances.

thank you and good luck to you all ?

Firstly, I would say apply no matter what, as comparing yourself to others during this process may only make you more anxious!

With that said I have a 3.83 GPA and work as an RN Extern in a neuro ICU, with previous RN extern in an LTACH. I am also a research assistant for my university and am a certified HIV and Test Counselor. I also am apart of some of those basic nurse orgs like Sigma Theta Tau and the student nurses'  association. In short, so long as your GPA is fine and you have some degree of work OR volunteer experience, you will be just fine.

Best of luck to you and thanks for the well wishes!

Hi, I applied and interviewed for the adult ED at Vanderbilt. Wanted to know if anyone else has and how their interview went??

Hey guys!  I had my interview yesterday and It went great! The team I interviewed, they were really supportive and helped along with the Behavioral Response questions a lot. They kind of expected there to maybe be interviewees that had never used the method before, so they took the time to make sure before they began those questions that I knew how to answer them effectively. They were mainly interested in how I answered the questions that they asked be but were also open to asking me about experiences that I had listed on my resume and cover letter. I was very pleased with how the interview went. Whatever the outcome might be, I can be confident in how I conducted myself with their questions, as they really made me feel that I was being heard and listened to intently.

Hey! I highly encourage applying no matter what. From what I understand, GPA isn't weighted hardly anywhere near work or volunteer experiences with this program. They don't even ask you to list your GPA on the application, although they do request some unknown documents from your advisor that they state is to simply make sure that youre actually enrolled in an accredited nursing program and are going to graduate before the start date of the program cohort you would be a part of. (I could be wrong in some of these things, in part, so just know that this is simply my own understanding of the process thus far.)

I currently have somewhere around a 3.2-3.3 GPA in nursing school. I have about 8 months of tech experience, as well as my clinical rotation hours with school, that are clinically based. The majority of my experience that I believe helped my application process was the thousands of hours of volunteer work that I have accrued in high school and college working with children, teens, and adults with disabilities. Vanderbilt LOVES volunteer work and hearing about your passions, whatever they may be. Hope this helps!

Yay! I am so glad you got through the interview and that it went well! You should be really proud, and now you get to join the rest of us in the waiting game. Best of luck!

Hi everyone! I also had my interview yesterday with the cardiac stepdown unit. I think it went well! It was super conversational and the nurse manager was so kind. There was one question that I for sure stumbled with but she was so understanding and seemed to brush it off. I have not heard anything since so I will be anxiously waiting as well. Good luck! ?
