Vanderbilt Nurse Residency winter 2011 cohort

Published

Figured I'd start a thread for those of us applying to the Vandy nurse residency program for 2011 to share thoughts, feelings, questions and to network with eachother a bit.

I'm Duluth! I'm a new grad with a previous degree in Biology. I'm applying for the Adult Critical Care track, with hopes of matching to Trauma or Emergency Services.

Specializes in Med/surg, Quality & Risk.

They said it was dependent on the needs of each unit on your particular rotation and they meet with the clinical managers of the units like next week.

Specializes in Family Practice, ICU.

That's what they told me too. Just got back Monday from Nashville. What a cool city. Great food, nice people. Vanderbilt is an awesome university, and the med center looks like a great place to work. I could easily get used to living out there.

We'll see what the next 2 weeks bring. If anything, it was a fun little trip. I might re-apply for the summer cohort if I don't get in this time.

The nerves are definitely starting to kick in! I am hoping we hear back around the same time last years winter cohort did (Nov. 10!

Is anyone else having trouble sleeping this week?!? :nurse:

Yeah, the nerves are definitely kicking in. I loved Nashville, thought it was an awesome city. I've been looking at apartments there, but trying not to get my hopes up too much.

My main thing is I'd like to be able to plan out my career for next year. I have another internship that I'm interviewing for in December, if Vanderbilt doesn't pan out. But I'd prefer to just not have to worry about the 2nd interview, haha.

We'll see what happens! And despite your temptations, nobody steal any Ativan or Ambien from the hospitals. ;)

yeah, I am nervous as well! I hope we find out soon.

Oh yeah Im really getting nervous and anxious about hearing the news too! This wait is driving me crazy! It looks like the last winter group heard late afternoon on the 10th. I will just be praying and trying not to get my hopes up until we hear! :heartbeat

Was anyone else disappointed to learn what the pay is? $18.25/hr base pay??? Are you kidding me? After taxes that is less than I made at babysitting jobs in high school. I don't know how I will support myself on that, if I get in.

Check towards the end of this post to see what some of the past residents have found out about housing, etc. so you can be prepared.

Yeah, it's pretty low. Lowest I've heard of for any RN job. But you do get the night differential of $3.00 and a weekend differential of $6.00 per hour, so that's not bad. Plus, you're bumped up a dollar after the first seven weeks.

I like nights and weekends anyway, so I figure it'd average out to be around $21-22/hr if I mix up days, nights and weekends. That is, if I get in. If not, I'm flying out to Michigan for an interview in December.

Hopefully we hear something soon!

Hey all! I just came across this thread. I had been doing my "research" in the other Vanderbilt NUrse Residency thread! I applied and interviewed for the Adult Medical track. It was an awesome and intense experience! Loved every minute of it. I can't wait to hear back. Really hoping I get into the program but really just blessed for the opportunity either way. And NO I am NOT sleeping either! haha.

Hey, I saw where someone else was going to consider to apply for the Summer track as well, if they don't get in. I had thought about that too! Good luck to all and hope we all get the results we want!

Specializes in ICU, ED, PACU.

Letters are out (via email).

I will be turning down my offer for Adult Critical Care as I took a different position at the University of Iowa.

Congrats to one of the waitlisters :)

I got turned down for peds. One door closed, others will open.
